A Couple of Questions ......

Okay, I don't want to sound ignorant but I need some help.. Cassie is 3 months old and I took her to the vet yesterday for her last set of shots and her rabies shot. I told him I was glad we were done with shots for a year and he told me that I wasn't through. He said since I take Cassie with me to so many places and she is in contact with alot of kids at the ball field (both my boys play ball 4 days a week + practices) that she needs to come back in 3 weeks for another Parvo shot. He also sais she needs to get some kind of shot that is administered nasally. I cant remember the name of it or what it was for. Do you guys know why she would need these? I can almost understand the Parvo shot but I am in the dark on the other. I want her to have the best protection but I dont want them giving her un necessary shots either!

On a totally different issue- we had a REALLY rough day 2 Fridays ago and I can JUST now type about it without crying uncontrollably. I took Cassie outside to potty as usual after work.. I always put her leash on because she is a fast little rascal and she will get away from me too easily. Well, to make a VERY long sotry short she ended up bolting after a neighbors kid and snatched her leash out of my hand and was darting for the road and of course a car was coming. I screamed and was running for her but could not get my hands on her. It was like everything was in slow motion.. The only thing I could think of in that split second to do was to step on her leash so she didnt get under the cars tire and get killed so thats what I did- but what happened was she stopped at the last second to turn around and run back towards the house and I stomped on her HEAD........... I was barefooted but STILL.... She started screaming and flopping around and it even brought my husband out of hte house and the neighbor across the street too! I ran after her and picked her up and ran inside with her so I can look at her to make sure she wasn't paralyzed or something! I was crying so hard that I couldnt even SEE her but all I could do was hold her and rub her and tell her how sorry I was and how much I loved her and couldnt live without her.. She was totally fine and was playing with my boys 5 minutes later and eating and drinking just fine but I cried non-stop for about 3 hours and then every time I looked at her after that..

I had to tell you that to say this- my groomer told me (when I told hre the story) that she didnt need a leash alone- she needed a harness. So I went out and bought one and its great but it is a BOOGER to get on!!! Can someome give me some tips to make it easier? She hates for me to put it on her and she bites it while I am trying.. After its on she doesnt mind but I usually end up leaving it on her all day if its a weekend and I'll be home with her all day.. Please help me ladies! I need you!

hi amy, what a story!!! i understand the drama you went through because i experienced something similar w/my chloe.

ok first the shots, i'm not sure about another parvo shot, my vet did not recommend that but she did recommend one for lyme disease which i will be doing on thurs. (a lot of people here do not agree w/vaccinations, but everyone has their own opinion. i for one treat my doggies like my child and she's fully vaccinated). i think you should post the shot question in puppies and holistic health to see if anyone knows anything in there.

as for the whole running away fiasco. i would of recommended a harness to you in the beginning for two reasons: 1. its better for little dogs since they tug and the collar ones can hurt their throats. 2. they cannot wiggle out of them and they are very safe.

don't feel bad about what happened, it does happened. i'm so sorry you experienced it because i know how it feels when your heart hits your throat at times like that. chloe ran off like that at a horrible time, it was the first day back from her spaying. she was in the house and we were on the porch, when i opened the porch door, she sprinted out like a maniac (something she's never done, I say it has something to do w/the spaying) and ran out to our backyard (not fenced). my husband was barefoot and started sprinting after her into the wooded area that leads out to the MAIN ROAD where cars are flying down the road. i was helpless because my leg was in a brace for hurting my knee. so i'm limping trying to catch up to them crying for chole begging her to come back and my husband is running as fast as he could and couldn't get her. at one point she ran towards my direction and i started telling her "come chloe, i have a treat, come get the treat" and she came. i grabbed her and kissed her and cried. it was a horrible feeling. so i totally feel your pain. it happens, that's all i could say. though buying a harness is a great way to keep our little ones from wiggling out. it is a pain in the begginning to get them use to putting it on but eventually they get it. try your best to make it a 1, 2, 3 quick process. don't mess with it too much as you're getting it on, that's what freaks them. i usually place my boogies on the floor and i ususally put in their paw into the first loop, then i put the one over the head and finally i snap it closed under their belly. 123 quick. practice it on a stuff animal if you have to. sounds silly but it could save you drama from getting it on Cassie.

Wow Amy, what a story... I understand your concern and freaking out... the same thing happens to me each time something happens to one of my girls... and the funny part is that they get over it so quickly but us, we traumatize so easily, I need a good hour of crying to get over it!!!!! I'm sure your girl thought it was all play!!!!
Anyway, my only advice is to put her in the NILIF right away and really work on her commands... teach her "come" so when she gets loose she will come back to you, also stay, sit and down... so that it will be easier for your to get on the harness or collar... For now your girl enjoys all that wrestling, she must think its a game... so just work on that and you'll see the difference. When she gets loose DONT run her, that will make her run even faster, just walk in a normal pace (no matter that inside you are going crazy) and call her with a sweet funny voice, like if you were playing... and DONT freak out.... at leas not until you have her with you

Regarding the shots... I have no idea, but Nala got two shots of parvo when she was a puppy... there's a lot of parvo around here and its required for pups to get two shots... then they get one yearly... about the other shot, I never heard of one like that... but that part you may want to post it in the holistic health forum, they really know a lot about it!!!!

I would bet the intranasal vaccine was for Bordatella (aka Kennel Cough)

a lot of kennels, if you board your dog, and training facilities require dogs to be vaccinated for kennel cough. I vaccinated 2 of my dogs and the efferts were not good (lots of cough, sneezing, general lethargy) but apparently normal. But, all in the fun decisions we make as dog owners. I personally have seen many ill effects of over-vaccination in my rescued stray, Lucky, as he went through our local humane society, who lost his shot records and re-vaccinated him before we could take him home and he is the least healthy of all three of my dogs, and has had the most health problems. But, if this is related to the vaccines, who is to say, right Anyway, this discussion would be more fitting on the holistic health forum, just wanted to let you know what the vaccine through the nose most likely was!

Nasal one is generally Kennel Cough from what I remember. They give shots here, but in the US I remember it being for Kennel Cough

Hey there!

Usual required Puppy vaccinations are:
Distemper (administered at 6-8 weeks, 9-11 wks, and 12-14 wks of age)
Adenovirus (same as above - protection against Hepatitis)
Parainfluenza (same as above - boosters can be given internasally)
Parvovirus (also at 6-8 wks, 9-11 wks, and 12-14 wks)
These 4 are all covered by the standard DHPP vaccine.
DHLPP includes Leptospirosis; this vaccine may be given 4th in this set at around 16 weeks of age.

Then there's...
Bordetella (Kennel Cough), which may be given intranasally. Technically, it can be given as early as 2 weeks of age, but it is usually recommended around 3 months of age.
Parvovirus (also at 6-8 wks, 9-11 wks, and 12-14 wks)
Rabies (as early as 3 mos)
Leptospirosis is an optional vaccination; disease prevalence varies depending on geographic regions. This is administered NO earlier than 3 months of age.
Optimal age for Lyme disease vaccinations is >3 months of age. It is also an optional vaccination.
Coronavirus, Giardiasis, and Adenovirus (Hepatitus) vaccinations are normally not recommended by vets.

Of course, the list specifics vary fromplace to place and clinic to clinic.

And yes, there are differing opinions on vaccination.
I feel that prevention is better than cure. :p

Amy, I know how you feel about Cassie running away. I think it was one or two days after I brought Lola home she got away from me (in the front yard of course) and took off across the street towards one of our neighbors that was standing outside. I was so scared!! I ran after her without thinking and Lola turned around in the middle of the road and came running back on to our lawn. Then she was running circles around me so I dropped down on my knees and when she ran by I held her to the ground so I could get a hold of her, and she started squealing. I felt so bad! I scooped her up and took her in the house.

One of the best things I've taught her is to wait at the door until I say "okay" so she can go out. If she starts to get up as I'm opening the door I close it and start over. I usually keep treats in my pocket, just in case, and then I can practice "come" while we're outside as well.

The nasal immunization is likely kennel cough. There is a lot of different information out there on vaccines, just like in people. Best to find a vet that you trust and talk it over with him or her. Also never hurts to get a second opinion. I have my big guy vaccinated for everything. Also, after the initial puppy series, many vaccines can be given every two or three years (I go with two just in case).

Ladies... THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your help.. You guys are awesome! I also treat my dog like my child so she is fully vaccinated but like you all said, its a matter of personal preference and I totally respect that. Now that you said the nasal vaccine is Bordatella I do remember that is what he said... Just couldnt think of it for anything.. I will have to think about that.. She already does some coughing like she has something in her throat sometimes and she sneezes some but I'll really have to talk to him and research that before I make a decision. I really liked the idea pf practicing with her harness on a stuffed animal. That made me feel stupid because I didnt think of it..
