Hi Maria!

Thank you VERY much for your warm welcome. I'm very happy we have this new site up and running. I was horrified when I learned about DD crashing.

Hi Renee,

I'm still shocked about DD crashing. I guess the only consolation is this new site ( full of familiar names, including yours ) makes it that much easier to accept the loss.

Looking forward to your invaluable advice, posts in this new site. :D

Renee!

You may or may not remember Franny from the other site. But you and the other posters were helping me with her growling problem and chasing deer problem. I already thanked you for the growling part.

Guess what happened yesterday. Picture this... two deer... one dog in close proximity to deer ... dog unleashed and on the other side of creek from owner... dog flushes deer out. Dog runs up hill after deer. Anxious owner calls dog back. Dog hears her the second time. Dog stops dead in tracks. She lingers. Owner calls again. Dog returns with a brief stop at the creek for a drink to calm herself down. Dog returns to owner. Owner and dog celebrate for a full two minutes with treats and a tug of war with stick. Renee, I think it was the NILIF program! Since we were trying to fix her growling, we stopped going to the dog park, did much more leash work and avoiding the dogs that she had a problem with. This seems to have transferred to my (not her) issue with chasing deer.

Thank you Renee!

Hi Monique!

Wow, good work!! That's a dog-owner's dream to get a dog to recall in the face of that kind of distraction!

Did you do a lot of recall training? I know that the NILIF program is extremely effective. I see this everyday in my practice how dogs calm down, they pay closer attention to their humans, and they're happier.

I'm thrilled that your dog came to you Monique. Continue working on recall training too, even though you got such a perfect response. Coming when called IS the hardest behavior to teach a dog when there are major major distractions going on. I congratulate you on your successful training! Whoohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

Best regards,

Renee!

We do a lot of recall training... but I think it was the fact that we started doing more leash training that did it. Because it was easier, and her recall was somewhat reliable, we would keep her off leash. However, when her growling started, we had to stop taking her to the park and do more walking along this paved trail. She had to be on leash because of all the bikes and joggers etc. So I think she just needed reminding that all her freedom was a "treat". And also the NILIF program. Both helped with recall, I believe.

Now that I think of it. I also reduced the distance that I allowed her to wonder from me. She used to take off with another dog that was allowed to take off for 10 minutes at a time. I stopped that. So in a sense, we were practicing recall but with less distraction.

Thanks again!

Hi Renee!

You helped me last year regarding fear aggression issues surrounding my female aussie Ruby. While it's a never-ending labor of love to reduce her fears, she has improved quite a bit:-)

It's nice to have you here.

Warm Regards,

Michelle

Hi! I had just discovered DD and then it crashed so I don't know much about who is who on this new site. My big guy has separation anxiety, and I have been in consult with a behaviour specialist, but because I live in a remote area it is all by phone. I have been focussing so much on the separation anxiety that I didn't see his aggression as a problem. Ya right! Now I don't know if I should continue dealing with the separation anxiety or if I can work on more than one behaviour at a time. I just finished a master's course that I have been taking, so now have more time to devote to Harley. Harley seems to be fine meeting other dogs, people, cars, kids on bikes/skateboards, etc when we walk with him on leash. But if he is not on leash, or if he is in the car, or if he is in the house and sees a person/dog/skateboarder/car/ ANYTHING he barks, growls, all hair up, etc. If outside, he'll run right up to them but stop and not bite. So we haven't been going on any off-leash walks, and I have been rewarding him for walking calmly past these distractions (there are a lot when we walk in town). ANy other suggestions?

I'm sorry I haven't been responding to many posts lately. I am swamped with dogs who seem to be coming out of the woodwork with behavioral problems. Not complaining, but I'm gone most of the day until later in the evening. I want to thank all of you again for your welcome messages. I will be checking in as often as I possibly can.

Warmest regards to all of you.
