It really depends on the dog. Some dogs never stop, some never start. We have an 18 month lab, and his chewing has lessened a lot in the last couple of months. He hasn't actually chewed up something during that time. Only toys, nylabones, etc. Although we still have to take sticks away from him!!
Previously, he had chewed shoes, boots, gloves, towels, the siding on the shed, leashes, etc.
So, just keep watching and hopefully, it will decrease as time goes on. Just be sure your dog has plenty of toys to chew!!

To be honest, if I was a dog with nothing to do, I would chew everything. There is not much else to do when you don't understand the english language, can't figure out the funny images in the TV and can't read a book. What else do you do but lay there like a log? YOU CHEW ON THINGS!!! Giving your dog pleanty of exercise and games to play will help get him out of the behavior. Dogs do sleep more than humans, so tire him out then use YOUR free time as you wish. I play for hours everyday in the backyard with my dog. He runs and runs and runs, then we go in and I lay on the couch and he sleeps. You should also eliminate everything he is chewing on if you can't watch him. I know this is not always easy but it is important to get him out of the behavior by removing the opportunity. You can slowly reintroduce things once he builds up trust. Buy him lots of solid bones to chew on. I recently found that my dog LOVES compressed rawhides. OMG RAWHIDES, HE GIVES HIS DOG RAWHIDES!!!! Rawhides will be bad for a dog if he is eating 5 a week or has bladder problems or a history of binding but the occasional rawhide will not hurt a dog. Anyway, the compressed rawhides last much longer. Plus we only give it to him when he is active or mouthy. Good luck, but like Jill said, it may never end. It's just a matter of curbing the behavior.

as a complete tanget... dogs can watch tv. Aussie doesn't care too much for it, but my pervious dog loved tv, especially bears. And once we saw a petsmart commercial with a cat baouncing around and at the end it "jumped" out of hte right side of hte tv. leai ran to the tv and was totally confused as to where the cat went once she got out of the tv.
That being said, I totally agree with Eric. Give you pup things to do. Aussie only chews on stuff when she is bored. So we try to keep her unbored. We give her compressed rawhides with supervision when we have guest over because she loves 'em and because she gets them not too often, they are a real treat.
We also have a runnig stock of frozen kongs with fruit and food and fun stuff:)

Julie,
This is my experiences.....
The dog most like to chew cause of boardom.
Tire out the dog as much as possible (an tire dog is the best dog).
Put some treats in side of an plastic bottle and let him play with it out side.
Put some peanut butter on rawhide.
Raw beef soup bones to chew on when supervisored.
Frogen kong with dog food mixed with kibbles/also frozen large bone filled.
if this doesn't work try bitter apple or spicsy sauce.
The last resort crate him when you are unable to watch him.
leave the radio on.
Good luck.
