I just finished reading Jan Fennell's The Dog Listener and really enjoyed it. I'd like to read more book about positive training methods/philosphy. Please list any books you'd recommend and if you don't care, put the authors name & book title in color so it's easy to find when we refer back to this post for more reading material. Thanx

General Recommendations. I love to read and want to keep learning more about dog behaviour and +R training. Our local library is sorely lacking on any current titles on any kind of dog training/philosophy and after discussing this with the librarian she said she'd try to get anything I could recommend in thru the Inter-library loan program. Then if I could recommend a few titles that I found particulary helpful & informative she would consider buying them. I know I've seen lots of books recommended in various threads but I thought it would be good to make a reading list that was easy to refer to so that is my purpose with this post. Thanks for anything you can suggust.

Those are awesome recommendations - I've read several of them and just got Pat Miller's "The Power of Positive Dog Training" yesterday. I liked it because it's actually like a game plan for training and she has charts in the back that you can use for tracking your progress. I kind of like to have things spelled out that way because it helps me to know what to work on first and then build on that.
I've also found some fun positive books on trick training if you're interested. Some use clickers, but you could do what works for you with any, of course.

I haven't read it, but it's been recommended more than once on a couple of the Clicker groups I'm a part of.

Sheryl, did read Click to Calm and found it not as useful as other books mentioned on this thread and forum. Since I also did not like Click for Joy that much, I wonder that maybe I don't like the format of the books that much.
My favorite books are:
Don't Shoot the Dog - Karen Pryor
The Other End of the Leash - Patricia McConnell
The Culture Clash - Jean Donaldson
And I do believe that the first one is a 'must read'. :)

Hi - I am reading Click to Calm for a while now and I actually do like the training recipes. Find I am referring to it a lot as I work with Linus, and the format, since I am not a trainer, is simple for me to follow. I particularly found the "heeling" section helpful, and it sort of reminded me to click when he is at the bay window and a dog goes by. That instant when he wasn't barking, and I finally remembered to click, has been a huge help. I also love Positive Perspectives by Pat Miller, Scaredy Dog! by Ali Brown, and The Complete Idiots Guide to Positive dog Training along with Bringing Light to Shadow by Pam Dennison. These are just a few that I didn't see listed. I have yet to read Don't Shoot the Dog--but will make that the next one on my list.

I am going to get a library membership on Friday in the nearest city, and they even ship books to places like where I live. My summer reading is about to begin too!
Thanks!

Stefie -
I just started "The Dog Listener" and was wondering how it turned out for you. It's really interesting to me. I ordered 4 books thru Amazon and couldn't wait the long weekend to start one so I purchased one on Friday to start my weekend. Did you initiate her training methods??
Thanks,
Susie

Help For Your Shy Dog by Deborah Wood is also a good book to read. She tells how to bring around your shy/fearful dog with positive methods. I was able to bring Sally around a little bit before getting this book, but after getting this book...WOW! Sally now walks (somewhat) on a leash and isn't so interested in being in her crate 24/7. I love this book!

I just got it, but haven't had a chance to really read through it yet.
I just got a huge order of books to wade through, lol. That one is at the top of my list though.
