I love my 3-year-old, male Beagle, and I guess I have gotten used to his barking and baying. But since consolidating households with my mother who is a senior, his bark has become an issue.

I would rather not use a collar that gives a static shock. This morning when he was going off, I put my hand around his muzzle and said "No!"

Do you have any other suggestions for dealing with this?

I have a 9 month old Beagle who barks...a lot. I have been giving him a soothing "settle" command and that has been working well. He was going from window to window barking at neighbors just teribley so I decided on the settle command. To begin, when ever he is sitting quietly or looking at people without barking I would kneel by him and pet him gently saying settle and good boy, good settle. He is learning it very well, but I have to remain very consistent and stay calm. We also work on this during our walks because he barks at strangers, I kneel down next to him then too and that has been improving also. Good luck. I hope this helps a little bit.

My one year old beagle is also a barker, I've heard its a beagle-hound thing. Anyway, just wanted to reassure what Jody said, train him... I use the command "shut the hell up" :D naahhh.... the real command is "shush"...
and Nala now understands it a lot, she enjoyed barking inside the house and that's not funny at 5 am in the morning!!!!
Good luck and welcome to doggie bag!!!

I don't mean to hijack this thread but does anyone have barking tips for a beagle who really only barks when she is in the yard (she rarely barks in the house, unless the door bell rings). We try to be conscious of it. We don't let her out before 6:30am and we don't let her out after 9pm but today we got an "anonymous" letter in our mailbox from "several of your concerned neighbors" about her barking. They claim that we don't pay enough attention to her and that we may not notice her barking. They've asked that we keep her inside when we're not home which I'm not going to do because my husband and I both work 40+ hour jobs and we have a nice fenced yard for that exact purpose. I found these and I'm curious if anyone has ever used one or knows anyone that has, http://www.safehomeproducts .com/SHP/ES/Bark_Free.asp

Any thoughts, suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I don't know how to control that either. My Beagle is only out when I am home so when he barks I bring him right in. Then after a couple of minutes let him out. If he barks again I bring him in. I just keep repeating and he is definately catching on. I'm sorry thats all the advice I have. I do know that throwing kongs, toys, all that good stuff is not going to work for you. Just seeing a squirell can set your dog off I'm sure. Or a neighbor outside. I would look through some websites or catalogs for controlling barking. Its harsh but maybe a bark collar that he is able to wear outside. They say they should only wear them whne supervised but maybe you would be able to find something. Good Luck.

Hi Cheri~

It is my opinion that dogs should be kept inside when their owners are not home. A dog that is left outside all day every day can get into so much trouble! I would hate for you to come home to an injured dog or one that was taken away by animal control or worse. I’m sure my dogs would love to be able to go outside while I’m at work but because dogs have the mental capacity of a toddler I don’t let them. Plus I have many neighbors & I don’t want to bother them. I love dogs & I understand that they bark but I don’t think people should have to listen to continuous barking. Because my dogs are locked up all-day I make sure I give them plenty of mental & physical exercise when I am home. If you feel bad keeping your dog inside all day look into getting a midday dog walker or brining your pup to doggie day care.

Please stay away from aversives to stop your dogs barking. They might silence the barking at first but are likely to cause more problems than they “fix”. Keeping your dog inside during the day is much more humane.
