Nutro Ultra

My two 6 month old shih tzu/poodle mix puppies were on Eukanuba small breed and not doing so well - very smelly, lots of eye gunk, etc. - so I switched them to Nutro Ultra Puppy. They seem to be doing better on it - is this good food for them to be on? They like it enough but they definitely don't run to the bowl. I was thinking about trying Chicken Soup for Puppies or Wellness - anyone have any advice?

Nicole, Natural Balance says it for all stages and is good along with the Chicken Soup and Solid Gold makes a food called something like Wee Bits with small hard food for smaller breed dogs, and all these foods have more protein and less grain than Nutro Ultra.

Nicole, also, it's good to mix some of the old food in with the new so the dog does not get the runs which sometimes they do anyway, because even good foods does not always agree with all dogs.

Eukanbua has by products and I don't consider it a very good food, so it's good you are switching anyway.

Nutro makes SEVERAL different lines. Ultra may be too strong (for a lack of a better word) for such small dogs. I have Sally and Precious on Nutro Max and they both eat it up like it has something delicious mixed in with it! I do have to say that I wanted to put them on Nutro Natural Choice, but Nutro does not make Weight Maintence in that line...only in the Nutro Max line. Since Sally was overweight and refused to walk on a leash, I had to put her on that.

A lot of people on this forum have their dogs on Nutro and will tell you that it is a good/great food to have feed your dog. Others will not. It's a matter of opinion, really. If your dogs are doing okay on it (have no allergies, no disgusting gas, etc.), I say keep them on it. Then again, I am a firm believer in Nutro.

hi, my experience w/nutro ultra was not good at all. i have a shih tzu also. i switched her from buffalo blue because i thought she didn't like it plus she was scratching her ears alot. when i switched to nutro she got a full ear infection and skin infection as well. i had to take her off and put her natural balance potato and duck. she's been great ever since.
