Hi,

Libby is samoyed husky and golden retriever. She has the head of the husky, but the body and colour of a retriever. She's 4 months old, 27.5 lbs and very active.

Our vet had told us she should be on the Hill's prescription diet, large breed so she wouldn't grow to fast and have bone problems, so that's what we did. However since she's been on it she's had really bad gas and vomitting. We had called the vet and we were told to feed her smaller amounts more often because what she's probably doing is hoarding (sp) her food. They're reasoning was something outside is scaring her or she feels threaten and needs to eat her food up quickly. (we have no ohter animals)

Again we took their advice and the vomitting seemed to have went away until Sunday. Throughout the night she was vomitting, but after a while she had nothing to vomit so all that was coming up was mucos. We would let her out and she was eatting grass and brining that up.

She was suppose to be spayed on Monday but because of the vomitting and the fact that she had a slight fever we scheduled for another time. The vet gave us medi-cal can food to give her until the vomitting goes away. While on that food she has no gas and doesn't vomit. When we tried giving her her old food the gas and vomitting came back.

I went out and bought performatrin ultra, she hasn't vomitted while on it, but does get a little gas. No where near the amount she was getting on the Hill's prescription.

I was wondering if the new dog food is any good or should I switch her again to another kind. I'm definetly not going back to the Hill's p/d.

Any idea what may be causing her the gas and what was causing her to vomit?

Thank you
Diane

Hi,

Vets prescribe Science Diet because they get perks to sell it as well as selling Eukanuba which is not good either. Prescription foods can have cancerous preservatives like BHA, or BHT or ethyoquin or something like that and they tend to have too much grain and by products.

There are other companies that make food for big dogs that are much better than Science Diet. The Solid Gold brand makes Wolfcub Puppy and Natural Balance makes a food for big dogs at all stages of their life. I'm sure other people here can recommend other puppy food for dog's that will be big.

You can look up Solid Gold at their website and use their store locator to find where to buy it if it looks good to you.

I've heard of dogs having a lot of gas from food, but not so much throwing up unless there was some kind of problem. Mix the old food in with the new to prevent the pup from getting the runs as you make the transition.

Bye, Grace

Thank you

She is doing a lot better on the performatrin ultra. I did look up Solid Gold wolf cub and found a place where I live that sells it so we're going to try her on that.

I'm just so glad she no longer has gas and vomitting. She's eatting less with new food. She'll eat breakfast, won't eat her lunch and will eat supper and she's not trying to take our food out of our plates like she was with the science diet.

We approach the vet about it today when we brought her in to be spayed and he looked insulted. We packed a small container of her food just incase she is hungry while there today. We told him we don't want them giving her their food, she's to be given her food.

I just can't get over them selling/recommending a type of food that isn't good for the animals. They are there to tell you what's best for your animal, yet they sell you crap. How is that in the best interest of the animals? I would much rather do what's best for the animal than receive perks for selling something that isn't good.

Again thank you!

Diane

Our 5 month old Samoyed is on Solid Gold Wolf Cub. She loves it and is doing really well on it. She is now just over 30 lbs. My only complaint is the really large poops. For such a young dog, I have never seen just large poops.

Ann,

Thank you for replying. It's reassuring to see the same type of breed doing well on it.

I was surprised to see Libby's poop size increase when she went on the performtrin. I hope that doesn't mean they'll increase again once we try her on the solid gold wolf cub. I don't think they can get any bigger. :D
