View Full Version : Excessive humping

As I've said before, my friend rescued a Chi off the street. He's about 3 or 4 years old and is neutered. I brought Precious over to her house for the first time yesterday and he spent the entire time trying to hump her! He even tried to bite me twice when I tried to get him away from her! She got him under control and I felt like things were getting a bit out of control, so I brought Precious home. I've seen "dominance humping" (I know it's not called that, but for a lack of a better word, that's what I'm using...) and he was doing that. He was clearly excited. Most of the time he would get on her butt but not to penetrate (I don't even think he knows how to tell you the truth) and sometimes he would just sit next to her and hump the air. He wouldn't hump the blankets or any of the toys around the house. He would just go after her. She is spayed and has been for quite awhile now.
I'm at a complete loss as to why he's doing this or if I can stop this behavior. Precious seemed a little freaked out by this, as this is the first male dog that has ever done this to her. For about an hour after we left my friend's house, when I would put my hand near her butt (or if anything got near it for that matter) she would look a little worried and would make a weird noise. She's okay today, but I felt so bad for her! I'm not going to bring her back over there until I know if I can stop this behavior or not.
Thanks so much!

Whoa. Not a good scene. Maybe this is one for the behaviour experts on this site! Does this dog do the same thing to other dogs?

My friend said it has been a long time since he has been around any other dogs, so I'm not sure. I think the other dogs around where this dog lived previously were all male and much bigger than him. He's a Chi and the other dogs were Labs and such and they all got along perfectly.
My friend emailed me and said that he was moping around the house for an entire day after Precious left. I've never seen a neutered, male dog have such a severe reaction to a spayed, female dog like this before! Precious plays with male Chis that are not neutered all the time and they do not try to hump her at all! I'm so confused. lol

I am trying to find out some information about neutered male dogs. We have a vet who visits here every few months, and who I question some of his practices. I know of two male dogs who he neutered, who still try to 'breed' females. The male obviously can't produce puppies, but they even get 'stuck' with the females. I was present when both of these dogs were neutered, and personally saw the testicles cut off! I know that in horses, if they are cut 'proud', they still have epididymis (sp?) and still act like studs. My sister is a vet, and doesn't know if this would happend with a dog. I know that the vet who comes here uses a method that is different (and maybe not really approved) for neutering male dogs. Maybe that's what's up (no pun intended) with this little guy. Or maybe one of the behaviour experts could speak more about it.

I have a 2 males both fixed at 8 wks out of the shelters. 1 of them has never humped in his life and the other is our little humper. He doesn't do it to his brother, who is much larger. He does it when he get "happy" excited. If you are playing on the floor at his level or sometimes with little kids because they are lower to his level. He does not hump the leg just when your down on the floor with him playing or if he gets excited playing with another dog. Its a little embarassing, sometimes if I do a little like towel snapping thing with my backhand lightly across his bottom he realizes and stops. You know like move along little doggie. His trainer did say it was a excitement thing with him that is how he lets it out. He gets excited easily, like when he knows he's going for a walk and he sees a house where he knows there is a dog he will start whimpering almost crying in the anticipation 2 houses away. We are working on it, but we do have one rule there is no humping mommy in the kitchen. Sometimes when I talk on the phone I sit on my kitchen floor playing with him.
