Hello everyone,

I am currently stumped on what to feed my Jax. We started him out on Eukanuba Lamb and Rice for puppy and he did really well on that. After reading the list on doggie door we decided to feed him Solid Gold large breed puppy food. However we are not satisfied with this at all. He's been on it for around 2 months and he still has soft stools. My husband and I are so tired of wiping his behind everytime he goes #2. Has anyone else had similiar results on this food? Should we give this food more time? Does anyone have any recommendations for a large breed puppy food? Thanks so much for any help!

I feed Bogart Solid Gold Large Breed and he does great on it! He gobbles it up in no time, although, I think bulldogs will gobble of anything that remotely resembles food ;). Bogart is actually an Olde English Bulldogge which is a little different from yours-longer legs, slightly longer muzzle, etc. Most people recognize him as a bulldog though. Anyway, just out of curiosity why did you switch if he was doing so great on the previous food? I say stick to what works even if it's not considered a "super" premium food. By the way, would love to see more pictures of Jax!!

Thanks for the quick reply. We switched his food because the vet said he needed to be on large breed and Eukanuba wasn't on the list at doggie door. I'm thinking of going back to Eukanuba but to the large breed puppy formula. Any other suggestions for puppy food. I'm willing to try anything.

Jax was 8wks old in these pics. I'll post some more later from my home computer.

Christy, I don't know if you did this, but when you switch to a new hard food, you have to mix the old food in with the new food, because apparently dogs get diarreah if switched right away.

How long should you wait for more solid poops? I wonder that myself, though I feed canned food and switch from week to week, but switching and diarreah seems to be a hard food problem.

Have you seen **** Van Pattern's Natural Balance, normally called Natural Balance, but I add that in so it's not confused with Ultra Natural. NB seems to taut their food as being for all stages of a dog's life and they say their food is good for big dogs. Now I don't know if they mean in height or in width:) Either way, it's a pretty good food and should be reasonably priced.

Even the best foods can produce diarreah. Some foods just don't agree with every dog.

Good luck - Grace

I feed my dog canned Natural Balance which I only find in Petco and not Petsmart in my area anyway. If you decide you like the food, you can use their store locator to see who sells it.

If you have any of the old Eukanuba left, you can mix it with whatever new food you choose. Since I don't feed hard food, I don't know what the rule of thumb is for how much new to mix with old.

Bye, Grace

We feed Solid Gold Wolfcub to our 5 month old Samoyed and she is doing just fine on it. Her stools are firm, but very large. She loves the food. I mixed it very slowly (over a 3 week time period) and she did just fine. I also add 1/2 teaspoon 2x a day of Dr. Goodpet probiotic.

I did hear that Innova was coming out with a large breed adult and puppy food. You might want to take a look at their site http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=home-tab and read about it.

We did the switch over a 10 day period. He never actually had diarrhea just the soft stools. We figured it would firm up since this was such a good food. Unfortunatly that hasn't happened. I guess Solid Gold just doesn't agree with him. I sent my husband to the store last night to pick up the Eagle Pack large breed puppy and he came back with the Nutro NATURAL CHOICE®
LARGE BREED PUPPY Lamb Meal & Rice Formula. :-? Jax did really well on the Eukanuba Lamb and Rice but it wasn't for large breeds. So hopefully this will be better for him. I know that Nutro is not on the list but this formula doesn't look to bad. It doesn't have ground yellow corn or by-products. Here is a list of the ingredients:
Ingredients
Lamb Meal, Rice Flour, Rice Gluten, Rice Bran, Ground Rice, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of natural Vitamin E), Dried Beet Pulp, Natural Flavor, Sunflower Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of natural Vitamin E), Potassium Chloride, Dried Egg Product, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Taurine, Zinc Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Choline Chloride, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Biotin, Manganese Proteinate, Garlic, Manganous Oxide, Chondroitin Sulfate, Niacin, Calcium Iodate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Vitamin A Supplement, Copper Sulfate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), L-Carnitine, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate, Sodium Selenite, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid.

We started the switch this morning by adding a little of the nutro with his current food. Hopefully this will agree with him.

Is your dog a large breed? Not that it matters if it works for you, but I was just wondering. I thought English Bulldogs were approx. 35-45 lbs?
I have never really figured out the difference between large breed and other foods. I currently feed large breed food to my 100lb and 55lb dogs, and they are doing great on it. I feed it because of the glucosimine/chondroitin (sp.?) to help head off arthritis and the like (it works in racehorses...).

Christy,
I have fed Finnegan the Nutro lg Brd puppy since he was about 3 or 4 months old. Then at about 9 months switched to the nutro adult lamb and rice. He seems to do better on the lamb rather than the chicken.
Our new puppy, when we get him on Friday, will be on Pedigree (from the breeder). We will be switching him to the Nutro puppy within the next couple of weeks.

Thanks Jill for the encouragment! I really hope he does well on the Nutro.

The vet said he was a large breed. He went to the vet about 3 wks ago and he weighed 33lbs. She said he would more than likely reach 60-70lbs given his build. I'm with you on the confusion about large breeds. I've had some people tell me it's +75lbs. Our vet says it's +50lbs. So where going with what she says. Figure it can't hurt either way.. :)

I use the large breed for the same reason as Heather, for the joints etc. Finnegan is still at 90 lbs. I don't think the puppy will be that much, but we'll see.
Only 2 more days!!!
