I sent a donation to my favorite shelter in the Eastern Sierras of California www.InyoPets.org, in memory of my cat Missy who I had to put to sleep 3 weeks ago. I received the nicest note and this poem with it:

If It Should Be

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain sould wake me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I will understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come will hold no fears,
You will not want me to suffer, so,
When the time comes, please let me go.

I know in time you too will see,
It is a kindness you do for me,
Althoughmy tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering, I've been saved.

Do not grieve that it should be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do
We've been so close, these many years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

that poem is so sweet Cecile, when you have to make that choice, the thought of doing your best to stop them from suffering is the only comfort you've got.

When we had to put our dogs to sleep they gave us a poem like that too.

Wow that is really a sweet poem. It's so nice of them to send you that and it's great for you to donate to your shelter in your cats name.

How sweet!
When my Jake passed 7 months ago, my veterinarian made a donation to the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) in his name. I was so touched by that gesture.
Little things help so much.

When our little pug had to be put down last year, our vet also made a donation to the veterinary school he attended. Our family kind of joked about it because the university he got his degree from is a bitter rival of my husband and my alma mater. We were kidding, though. It was very touching, and I did know everyone in his office had gotten attached to our pug.

That poem put me to tears. It just brought back all the memories I have of my dog Zak and that time I had to make the same decission. I can't believe it's been over a year since he's been gone, and I still get so emotional about it.
It's a very sweet poem and it was very thoughtful of the shelter to have sent it.
My sympathies for the passing of your Missy.

that poem was so touching. i'm such a cry-baby. i put myself in those shoes and i can't imagine the pain of putting my babies to sleep. its like letting a child go, but i know what must be done must be done. i'm so afraid of that.
