View Full Version : Maple ate the Cell Phone Case.

Well, after a late night at work and an incredibly early morning fundraiser, my wife and I both crashed out asleep on the couches while Maple was busy with her bone.
We awoke to a strange noise. Maple was working on tearing the hand strap from my wife's cell phone. Where is the leather/spandex/plastic case for the phone??
The only remnants seem to be the transparent plastic panel that covered the phone's keys. There are no peices of leather left. Uh oh.
This is not typical. Certainly, she's gotten a hold of things off limits before, though she'll tear them up and toss them around on the floor before eating a couple of bits; and there's always been more remnants.
My concern:
Did the culprit swallow this thing whole or has she broken with tradition, chewed it and eaten all the bits of the thing?
IF the latter is true, I suppose it will pass through her. If the former is true though, an expensive trip to the vet is in order.
My question:
What signs should I be looking for in this very active Viszla over the next day to indicate wether or not there's a leather/spandex lump in her belly? (besides weird looking stools)

I have no idea, but I just wanted to say it's quite funny and she's very cute!! Good luck,

I would call the vet and ask what to do. If the vet does not have an after hours number, find a 24-hour vet in the phone book. I wouldn't wait until something bad happens...

Jay,
As you said, if she chewed it up and ate it, it will probably work itself out. I know our lab has eaten many things that he shouldn't have, and everything has come out fine in the end.
You should watch for any signs that your pup is in discomfort. Pacing, whining, straining to poop. You are the best person to tell if your dog is not acting normal. As stated previously, if you can call your vet, do so at the earliest that you can.
I know our lab has eaten plastic, leather, cloth, dirt, sticks, wood, etc. and everything came out ok, but that's our dog.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I have to say, I agree with Jill. Vizlas are usually sturdy dogs. You may want to call the vet and see if they can give you more signs to look for...maybe have a more in-depth conversation with them. I think you should be okay for one day though.

Maggie pulled off Sadie's leather collar and all I found was a small piece with the tag and the buckle on it. Couldn't figure out where the rest of it was, until this morning when she threw it up in pieces all over the carpet. That's the second collar she's torn off the other dog, in three weeks, but the first one she's eaten up completely. She seems fine. Her diet often includes pieces of wood, and plastic nursery pots, too, with no harm done.

I use Nalu's "diverse diet" as my markers in the backyard for where his poop is. In other words, he eats so much "crap" (virtually anything he can get a hold of) that most of his poop is filled with multi-colored objects!
Well, maybe I'm exagerating a little, but unfortunately, he's chewed up many things that are not supposed to be in his diet and they all seem to come out the other end. And he's as happy and energetic as if he just ate a bowl of kibble!

I can understand that Chris:) While cleaning up outside I found remnants of a comb, pick, paper towel, underwear...yes he actually eats them:) He has a gut of steel, that Beagle does!:) Never gotten sick from anything. He just seems to put it all up. I am constantly making sure doors are shut and stuff is put away, but he's a sneaky one.

How old are your little thieves? I keep hoping that Spanky will outgrow this. I try so hard to keep everything out of his reach, but he seems to inevitably find something that he shouldn't have and eat it.

Mine is 8 1/2 months...when will it ever end?? He just ruined a comb and a roll of toilet paper last night. My daughter made a quick run from the bathroom to her room and back to the bathroom and in that time span he snuck the t.paper and comb:) Nothing seems to be safe...

Nalu is just over 8 months old. I figure if I leave something in reachable distance to him, it's fair game and I'll take the blame. Maybe he'll grow out of it someday...

Well, 48hrs after chowing down on a Spandex/Pleather delight, Maple peuked up half of it. The other half I guess came out eventually. Her poops were rather hard looking and quite black -- and now all is normal. Thanks for your advice.

Jay,
I'm really happy to hear that everything "came out" ok!!! One end or the other. LOL.
