okay, I have a nine month old Jack Rusell, he's a sweetie, but hasn't quite figured out the potty outside thing!

We've tried everything!!!!
and sometimes he's very good for a long time then, all of a sudden one day we turn around and there he is peeing!

(although he's usually so funny we can't even think of getting angry!)
Just imagine a little puppy sitting on the steps facing down with legs spread and peeign down the stairs!!He had a pretty good arc to it too!!
 so funny!!!!!!!

anyway back to my question..

I have decided to try to bell train him...anyone have any special tecniques??
I just got the bell yesterday, and I ring it with his paw everytime I take him out...he has ring it himself 3 times...once he even went poop after, but I think he was just exploring something new in his home....

does anyone have any hints???

Thanx!!!!

Well, I dont' have any hints. We tried bell training, but Whiskey never really took to it. Now he just sits at the back door and does his little potty yip to go out and the same thing to come back in. I don't even know how it happened, lol. I was so worried about potty training when I got him and it went horribly at first but then I just started letting him out like every half hour. I still sometimes out of habit just go to the back door and open it lol, cuz I used to do it so often. I think if you just watch very closely and let them out often, it just kind of happens. I dunno, I'm no expert, but that's how it happened with us, good luck and let us know how it goes,

Everything I've read points to a "it just clicks one day" occurance. I would ring the bell w/ Mugsy's paw before I took him out, but then when I tried to get him to ring it himself before we went out, he'd just sit RIGHT next to it, but whine when I tried to get him to ring it, like, "No daddy I don't WANT to!" So then I took advantage of the fact that he knew how to "high-5" and put my hand in front of the bell, said "high five!" and then when he swung at my hand with his paw, I pulled my hand away quick and he rocked the bell! Good boy!!!!!! and then whisked him out. I even started giving him treats after ringing the bell but before we went out to let him know ringing is a GOOD thing.

Now after we go outside he'll ring the bell again, because he loves it outside so much. I just ignore him and tell him "no mugsy, you already went pee pee and poo poo." He's getting the hang of it better and better every day.

We bell trained Misty and she got the hang of it right away. I placed quite a few bells on the door and each time we went out I would ring the bell and tell her "let's go potty". After just 2 days, she was going to the door and ringing the bells.

It was much harder when she was upstairs or far from the door. I tried putting another strand of bells upstairs in our room and that did work for awhile, but not consistently. Now we just make sure that before she comes upstairs she has been outside recently. It also has really clicked with her and she now runs downstairs when she needs to go.

Just keep ringing those bells and I bet it will be no time before you hear them rung consistently on their own!!

We bell trained Baxter as well. Same technique as most have talked about. We hung the bells and before we went out every time, we rang the bells with his paw. He started doing it on his own very soon. There would be a few times we would notice him at the door and we would ask him if he had to go outside, and he got excited.. we then said "ring the bells" and he did. We can tell when he really has to go out because he slams the bells against the door.

Eva,
Finnegan does this sometimes and went though a period where he rang it just to go out to play. If i knew he had just been out, and didn't have to potty, I just told him "no, you were just out. Go to your spot and lay down." He soon learned that I didn't jump everytime he rang the bell. Only when he had to potty. I pretty much know now what his potty schedule is, so that helps, too.

Eva,
Here's a great article on taking specific steps to teaching bell-ringing: http://www.clickersolutions .com/articles/2001b/bell.htm
