Hi,
I was a member of the K9U Yahoo group, and had/have two dachshunds. One, Rusty, is fear agressive. After reading all the wonderful advice on the group regarding behavior modification techniques for fear agressive dogs I started searching for a wire cage muzzle. It took me about a year to find one that would even come close to fitting him. Now, six months later, he has worn the thing out almost completely from rubbing it along the ground. The bottom bars are completely gone (lost those in the first month), and now the front of the cage is worn and broken in spots and is sharp. I keep a huge bandaid sealed up over the front of it so he can't hurt himself on it and change it daily. I ordered a new one, but it seems I got the LAST one. The company that makes them has gone out of business. When this one arrives it will be the only muzzle I'll have for him indefinitely. I have searched and searched for a similar muzzle and found nothing. The ones that are long enough are too big around and the ones that are small enough around are too short.
This little dog has made more progress in the past six months than in the entire year prior. He now walks up to people, including children, to be petted and does not growl or snap at them, but wags his tail and sometimes even rolls over for a belly rub.
We are now working harder on inter-doggie relationships and he's doing so much better. He still has a ways to go however, and I still cannot see myself completely trusting him with strangers, big dogs he doesn't know, puppies, or small children without the muzzle.
Does anyone here know where I can find a supplier for a wire cage muzzle for a dog with a 3" long 7" around schnoz? If not, are there any suggestions for prevention or slowing down wear and tear?
