Now that spring is here and the grass is growing, Nellie wants to eat some (just a couple of blades) every time she goes out. This always leads to her vomiting sometime in the near future. How do people keep their dogs from eating grass? I used to think dogs ate grass to make themselves vomit because the dog had an upset stomach to begin with. I really don't think that's the case with Nellie at all. She seems perfectly fine until after she has eaten the grass. I keep thinking she will get tired of the grass. Any ideas?

Hi Ann~
I think a few nibbles here & there this time of year is okay. But if Nellie's eating grass every time she goes out that sounds like too much. You may want to see what your vet has to say about it.

Sophie loves grass!!!! she grazes like a cow everytime we take her out... but she never throws it up. I even called the vet to ask if this was ok and they said that if she's not throwing up or showing any other sick symptoms then maybe she just really likes the taste of grass. I just bought some organic wheatgrass seeds on ebay and started growing it for her but its not quite ready yet. I would rather her be eating grass that I know where its been then the stuff outside that might have fertilizers or who knows what else on it. I'm not sure yet if she will eat the wheatgrass knowing her she probably wont... the stuff outside is much better... hehe :) Oh and the longer the grass gets the more she seems to like it... she a funny dog or maybe cow stuck in a dogs body...

I also have a couple of grazers on my hands. Both of my pups act as if they belong on a farm because they are constantly munching on grass when in the backyard. I think in past lives they were cows. Fortunately it doesn't make them sick and hopefully they are getting a nutrient or two in the process.

Well, our grass is pretty brown because I'm not a gardening type, lol. But Whiskey still likes to chew on it. I think he does swallow some, but mostly he chews on the longer blades, cuz they are dry and hard. I don't think he's ever chewed on green grass, lol

Finn likes grass, too. We had a yellow lab, Roy, who ate grass all the time. He knew which grass would be ok, and which one would make him barf, if his tummy was upset. It was funny to watch him pick through the grass to find the "right" kind!!!

I wonder if it doesn't have something to do with the time of year. 'Round here it's finally spring-ish, and the grass is coming in nice and green. Not only are my own dogs munching like mad, but so are my friends dogs. I have 2 friends with whom I usually run the dogs. Between the 3 of us, there are 6 dogs out there. At one point we all got a chuckle because 5 of the 6 were grazing at one time! (The lab was, of course, off swimming in the pond.) We started to ask ourselves if we were running the dogs or grazing the cattle. Though my fella Jackson has always enjoyed "a salad", this time of year he seems to enjoy them more than usual.

Kathryn,
Being from Illinois myself, I think they are as happy to see the green grass in the spring as we are!! My pup eats it until it snows and then he eats the snow!

Yeah, Sammy reminds me of that commercial on TV where the woman pulls the plug out of the wall --he grabs a piece of ST.Augustine grass and pulls forever!

My big guy keeps the lawn mowed in the summer too, and doesn't throw it up except on rare occasion. He learned that sweetgrass tastes good but does make him puke so he avoids it now.
I am a vegetarian, and figure that some dogs just like their greens!:)

One more grass eater here...Nalu grazes daily. Doesn't seem to throw up from it much though. Although he does do the choking, gagging, got one piece stuck in my throat routine fairly often when he's munching.
He seems to be most interested in the tall, fresh, soft green grasses. I sometimes think he eats more "green veggies" than I do!!
