Ok here's just two "little" things id like to share, most of you probably know about those allready, but for you who don't.. maybe its something to think about in the future.

1. Chocolate, NEVER EVER EVER _EVER_ give your dog chocolate, not even when he/she use the super cute "can i taste some of you delicious candy plz, plz, plz, plz"-eyes
chocolate contains theobromin, to much of this may lead to death.

The dark chocolate has more of this evil poison, and smaller dogs are more vulnerable, but id still have a none tolerance on this one.

2. Canine Bloat/GDV
Never give your dog alot of water after a hard training/run etc... just give your dog a handfull of water, then let "him" rest for a while, without water.
When his breathing is normal again, let him have more.

citat
The water caused the dry food to swell. At the same time, the dog was supposed to be engaged in strenuous exercise that included running and jumping. That resulted in the dog's stomach twisting on itself as the heavy organ was jostled about in the abdomen

after this you need to go to the vet, as fast as possible, for a acute operation.
In my case, i was lucky and Ido survived.
It took us 2 h, for other more unlucky dogs it can take 10 minutes or less then its to late.

Sorry for my bad english and my lazyness (not checking for gramatical errors :P )

Ps. admins if this is wrong forum for a post like this, feel free to move it.

Onions, grapes and raisons are also no good. It's still not clear why grapes and raisons are not good, but the a.s.p.c.a. does not recommend them along with other sources.

This is the link to what is poisonous for dogs. I got tired of looking for a "list" of items. It may be there somewhere. I see they have a plant list, but was too annoyed to find the "item" list like all the bad foods etc.

Grace,
If I remember correctly, grapes/raisens cause kidney problems.

That's what I heard, Jill.

Jill, yeah, I know they cause problems, but what was in question was why? Was it the grape itself or pesticides on the grape? What I have read is that it is the grape itself, but you read all kinds of stuff everywhere. This a.s.p.c.a. site specifically talks about grapes. I didn't read it since I don't feed Capri grapes, but it probably says why and that it's the grape itself???

The sad thing is, believe it or not, I have seen quite a few people saying they feed their dogs grapes. Now I had seen these posts way before I knew it was bad, so I could not warn them. Hopefully they have found out someway on their own. The sad part is that you are not even aware that you are killing or harming your dog if you are uninformed. Personally, I would not feed my dog anything veggie or fruit without looking it up, but grapes seem so harmless, so I guess people don't even think there could be anything wrong. I would never feed Capri a grape without checking it out on some kind of list to see if it's toxic in any way.

There are nutty people out there too. I was walking my dog and met another chi owner who's chi looked.....not too good and she said he had the runs and she thought it was because he got a piece of raw onion by accident and did not eat breakfast. I wanted to say, "why the hell are you walking this ill dog around?" I did say he looks like he could use a rest, and then she headed out of the park across a huge lawn, but didn't bother to carry this tiny 3lb dog who was weak and did not eat breakfast.

Maybe perspective dog owners should have to pass a sanity test before they can purchase a dog:)

Okay, I felt if I were to give out info to people about grapes, maybe I should be able to quote a source and say what the real problem is, so I went back and read the article. It's long, but this small paragraph sums it up:

Why did the fruit cause the dogs to become ill? No one knows. Suspect grapes and raisins have been screened for various pesticides, heavy metals (such as zinc or lead), and mycotoxins (fungal contaminants) and so far, all results have come back negative. In the cases where the grapes were grown in private yards, owners confirmed that no insecticides, fertilizers or antifungals had been used on the fruit.

So the answer is, the cause is unknown. It makes me not want to eat grapes too:)

My step-dad's parents are some of those "nutty" people. They feed their labs M&M's although they know chocolate is bad for dogs. And because of this my step-dad thinks feeding M&M's is fine as long as they don't eat a whole package. I told him chocolate isn't good for dogs and especially small dogs. I mean one M&M for a small dog is like giving one of their 100+ pound dogs a whole chocolate bar. Luckily he doesn't feed Lola anything, so I'm not too worried about him feeding them to her.
