This might not be the right place to post this but I'm not sure where it fits.

I'm looking for information on vaccine reactions. Our year old Havanese had an odd reaction. Several months ago she developed a quarter sized, raised bump on her side near her shoulder. All the hair fell out from that bump. It crusted over. After thinking it was ringworm and treating it topically to no avail, we decided to to a skin punch biopsy. As it turns out, it was "consistent with a vaccine reaction" according to the pathologist. The crusting was a secondary reaction. The biopsy has healed perfectly and the crusting has disappeared. Now she is left with a quarter sized area of pink skin that may or may not grow hair again. Luckily, as soon as her hair grows out (we had her cut very short when we thought we were dealing with ringworm) it will cover the spot.

My concern is this. It took several months for the lump to form, the hair to fall out etc. so I don't know WHICH vaccine caused this reaction. She had her last set of puppy shots at 16 weeks. She did not get the lepto vaccine or one other per the breeder's instructions due to breed sensitivity. She had her rabies shot at 6 months. Since I don't know which vaccine caused the problem I'm concerned about what will happen when it comes time for her booster this summer.

Is there a good web site perhaps that discusses vaccine reactions other than the typcial swelling of face, etc. that are fairly common?

Thanks for any information,

Susan

there is an article about vaccinosis in the articles section, but I think that kind of reaction is common with a rabies vaccination.

Bogart also developed a lump after his rabies shot. It didn't develop the crusting over nor the hair loss, but I would guess rabies.

My friend thinks it was the rabies shot that gave her pup a reaction which she got antibiotics for.

With horses, people put the saddles on wrong so it creates a "rub" on the withers. If it continues, the hair comes off and sometimes will not grow back. What helped with horses was putting some kind of creme, and part of what that does is keep the skin moist so the hair can grow. If the area becomes hard where the skin is not as supple, I think the hair would tend to not grow in.

Dogs can also get face swelling from bug bites they are allergic to.

Hey Susan~

I am not an expert on ths matter, as I have just began learning about vaccines' ill effects the last year or two. But I no longer give my dogs annual boosters, they are not necessary.

Here's an article on vaccines http://www.pets4homeopathy. com/pets4homeopathyartic les.html#vaccinosis

Hopefully Sam will be around to give you more info.

I'm thinking of foregoing the annual booster for McKenna even though it may have been the rabies shot that she had the reaction to. I haven't given my house cat booster shots for several years as she is strictly an indoor cat and doesn't come into contact with other cats. She's doing just fine. If it's the rabies vaccine McKenna has reacted to, I don't know what I'll do. Cross that bridge when I come to it I suppose.

Next time when you take your dog for a shot you can boost her immune system with homeopathic remedies. Before and afterwards to decrease the shock and lower the chances for reaction. I am into homeopathy. I will look into my books for more help and post it later.
OK, it did not take too long to find some help ;)
Here is a rabies nosode - it's a homeopathic remedy:

and here is for DAPP parvo:

To learn more about nosodes read this:

Hope that helps!

My pups always get a bump after their rabies shots. It rises about a week after the shot and stays for about another week, then it goes away. I've never had the crusting over, but it sounds like it was just a secondary reaction. I'll see if I can find something though.

Thank you all for posting links to articles. I am learning more each day. The bump is still present although some downy hairs have grown to cover it so we are very hopefull that her hair will completely cover it soon.

I am still afraid to have another rabies shot given to her when the time comes. The one she had at six months is apparently only good for one year, after which they give the 3-year version. She just turned one so I have six months to think about it.

State and countly law says I have to vaccinate her but I care more about McKenna's health than I do about state laws. In addition, the chances of her ever biting anyone is quite small, but then again, all it would take would be one playful scratch on someone's child and I'd have to admit that McKenna's rabies vaccines are not up to date.

McKenna's breeder suggested I ask the vet for a titer, to test her antibody level prior to giving her the next rabies shot.
