 Hello everyone! I have a different type of problem, now. At first, Angel was going in her crate. She still does that, but there has been a twist to the pottie training saga. I went over a friend's home and slept there Saturday night. Angel was with me. They have a 10 month old Sheltie, Angel's puppy friend since I got her. Well, Angel surprised me by standing by the door and crying/barking to go out. Once outside, she did her business. For over 24 hours, no accidents!!! NOT ONE. EVERY time she had to go, she went to the door, whined, cried and/or barked.
I thought, "wow, she got it!!!" I was sooooooooo excited! We arrived home yesterday. All went pretty well. While Angel didn't bark to go out, I let her out and she went. I guess I didn't trust her and kept on letting her out. Before bed, I woke her up, she followed me towards the back door. When we got there, I said, "Tell Momma", her signal to bark. She squatted down and Peed! right there in front of me! Geez! She doesn't get it. This morning, she peed outside, came in and pooped on the floor in the exact same spot! How is it a dog can be trained at one home, but not at HER home. Anybody??? PLEASE???? I'm on my last nerve!

So close, yet so far...:(
Sorry about the frustration, but I think I have a suggestion. You mentioned potty-ing in the crate and you mentioned potty-ing in "the exact spot" on the floor. I think you are correct, your dog doesn't "get it" because it smells to her like "the potty" in those places. In a new house that wasn't hers their was no "potty smell" inside, so she went "out". If I were you I would get a bottle of an enzymatic cleaner and steam clean your carpets or wash your floors and the crate with it. Anywhere there has been an accident.
I think this may help you, just a gut feeling based on what you said about your friends house.
Good Luck!
Heather

Vicki,
hey i was just going to post a very similar problem...so i'm really feeling your pain...the difference is this...Cleo will not go in her crate...only right next to the front door...unless we practically chase her to the front door she will pee there...we make her "speak" each time that we take her out, but she hasn't grasped that if she wants the door to open she needs to speak! the thing that is the smae as vicki's delima is that she will speak and wait at my mother-in-law's house every time we take her there!! anyway, i had JUST finished disinfecting the tile in front of the door a few minutes ago and i turned around and there she was PEEING on my newly cleaned floor(that shouldn't have smelled like her pee!) anyway any suggestions for me(sorry vicki for piggy backing your question) would be great!
thanks :)

they are buggers like that aren't they. Our puppy used to pee on the carpet immediately after steam cleaning, cause to her it 'smelled wrong'.
To dogs whose sense of smell is SO much more acute than ours that there could be still a smell there. The only thing I can understand your frustration and I would just keep trying to clean the 'spot' with an enzymatic cleaner and I would also take the dog outside and work from out there to start the "bark" training.
Good luck.
take care,
Heather
