Hi:

13 week old Sheltie called Shelby is digging in yard. We have a small square fence where I put her out, for about 20 minutes to get fresh air. Weather is getting nicer! She is digging holes!!!! Should I correct her when she does it? If yes, how? I have tried giving her a bone or toy, but she goes back to the digging. This is new to me, never had a dog that digged.

Yes...how do we stop the digging??? My beagle doesn't do it, but my Lab loves it. I want to plant flowers and someone said I would have to wait till he was older(9mos now)I am not going to wait. He needs to learn now though that it is unacceptable.

Haha....I find that really funny because I can't get my dog TO dig. His breed was bred for that purpose, hunting ground vermin, and I'd like to get involved with earth dog trials, but I don't know if it's gonna work out! lol! Well, I don't have any advice, just wanted to share! Good luck,

Digging is a tough one - it's a dogs nature. It's best to provide a spot where your dog is allowed to dig. In my case I divided my long narrow yard in two with a chainlink fence. The dogs have their yard to dig all they want and I have my garden and patio.

At the very least you might want to provide a small corner of your yard to direct the digging to. Even when I just had one dog, and one big yard, she had her spot that she was allowed to dig.

Good idea Cecile. Maybe I'll try to do that but maybe bury something in that space so it entices him. You guys think this will work?

One thing you can do in the areas he has dug where you do not want him to - fill up the hole with his droppings., then cover with dirt as usual. He probably will not dig there again! And, yes, I imagine enticing him to dig in the right spot with favorite toys would be a good idea.

Well, I kinda have the oppisite kind of problem. I want my dog to dig. Lol, I know weird :) But I do like the idea of having one space set aside for him. Thanks,
