Does anyone know how to fix constipation in a dog? He is looking miserable outside trying to go. Is there anything I can give him to relieve the pain? He has not eaten anything out of the ordinary, no change in diet. Behavior, excercise, sleep...all the same. Just constipated. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Jody~

You can give your dog canned pumpkin for constipation.
One other thing- it isn't "normal" for a dog to be constipated so something else might be going on?

How long has he been constipated? Maybe there is a blockage or something (ate something he shouldn't have like a toy, sock, or something). ???

Its been about 24 hours...I may be overreacting but he didn't go last night or this morning and I watched him try so hard. And he woke up a 2am to try again. Do you think I am overreacting or should I try the pumpkin?

Thanks...Jody

I would use the pumpkin or if you don't have that on hand I have been told to use some apple juice. If it goes on much longer I would call your vet.
Take care and good luck,
Heather

Thank you so much...I wonder if he didn't eat something like paper, socks, or dryer sheets. He got into those about a month ago and I am still picking them up every so often. Would those items constipate him? I did vomit this a.m. that is not totally unusual for him, It was bile and he had an empty stomach. He ate just fine and went for a nice walk and played w/ our Lab as usual before I left for work.

I would take him to the vet.
If he has a history of playing/chewing items like socks, etc. and he vomited bile along with constipation it sounds like a problem to me.
I would at least call your vet as soon as possible.
Good luck.

Jody, is he drinking enough water? If not, you can give him dropper fulls in his mouth throughout the day. This is not to say don't take him to the vet, but make sure he is hydrated. Check his water bowl to make sure he is drinking. Good luck!!!!

You know you are supposed to use the plain pumpkin and not the pie mix.
