My 7 year old hound mix is shedding his winter coat. His coat is fairly short, but thick. Is it normal to lose clumps of fur during the shedding period? I've only had Blu for 2 1/2 years (he is a rescue) and cant remember him losing clumps...

should I be concerned?

if it's the fine sort of downy stuff he's losing in lumps and he's not getting bald patches, then yes, it's perfectly normal and i'm sure anne will be able to give u some most excellent tips for grooming:)

Thanks Clair - I think it would classify as "fine downy stuff" and I haven't noticed any balding, perhaps the lightest of thinning in one spot.

any idea how long the shedding process takes?

Thanks for your help!

My hound, a beagle, will shed like crazy!!!! right now its on vitamins to help her with the shedding, but she does shed, you just pet her and a cloud of hair will fall out of her... anyway... I don't know exactly how shedding works, but now our summer is starting to kick in, so I think the environmental change has got something to do with it!!!
Good luck with that shedding, just keep brushing him as often as you can and clean up as often as you can too!!!! :bunny:

i can't really remember the time span. a dog i had in past yrs called lita shedded like that, funny thing she was a cross and had the same look as yr dog but she was a sand colour all over, i just used to pinch out the clumps. i'm sure it stopped though before summer was in full swing. she used to get it most around her back end above her tail and down her thighs and trousers.
