The great dane I had just adopted from the Humane Society, Chloe, has Parvo!! http://chazhound.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif
When we got her I knew many of the dogs had the Parvo virus and Kennel cough, but I was hopeing she didn't get it. She seemed healthy when we got her, but she started to not eat and had dierreah!! I took her to the vet and they are keeping her there for a while. This just really sucks!! I was just getting her all settled, not completely but pretty much, and this happens. I hope she pulls through!! I heard most dogs do, so I am hopeful.
They also wanted me to keep an eye on Lucas. I haven't seen anything wrong with him yet and am hoping he doesn't get it. He is up to date on all his shots and has a healthy appetite right now.
I really hope she gets better and comes home soon.

Was she not up to date on all her shots before you got her?? I'm so sorry this has happened!!

I had an appointment with my vet to get her on all shots this week on friday. The shelter didn't give her any shot as she was only their for like 1 day after the holding period for strays. I really don't know their policy on vaccinations. They don't have all the funding they need for all the dogs I guess.
I just wish I could've gotten her into the vet earlier, but they were booked. I feel a little bad for not catching this sooner. :( I made an emergency visit when she wouldn't eat and had diarrea. I feel like a bad parent.... :(

It's not your fault! If the vet was booked, then you had no choice. I must say, I volunteer at a non-profit no-kill animal shelter, and sometimes we don't have enough funding to give all our animals all shots they need. Most of the time we do, but if we have a slow donation period, then we're scraping up money...the shelter where you adopted Chloe may be in the same situation. I'm so sorry! I hope everything goes well!

Thank you for the thought.....I really hope she gets better soon.
I've never had a dog with any disease or virus like that. It's a bit scary.

You're very welcome. I've never encountered it myself, but I'm sure it is!

I think I need to go and start bleaching the floors. I already threw out all the toys and dog beds just in case. I'd really rather spend money on new stuff than have a chance of them gettting sick again. If anyone has any other ideas on what to do in the mean time, ie cleaning, it would be helpful.
Thanks.

Best of luck! By the way I don't think you were a bad parent, I think you are doing great. Would a bad parent buy new dog stuff so the dogs don't get sick again? NO! I hope your baby will be all right.

Hi Ashley, its so sad to hear your baby is sick... you were so happy bringing her home!!! But good thing you found about it soon... Well, its true that a lot of dogs have gotten thru parvo, so keep up your spirit!!! My case was this, my mini-schnauzer ran away from home when he was 3 yrs old, he was lost for about 2 weeks when we found him (actually somebody responded to an ad in the paper, figure that out!!!) and when he came he was kind of lethargic for the first couple of days and then diarreah hit, vomiting and no desire to eat, he had parvo... Mine was in the hospital for a week, his case was really bad since he got the virus early on when he escaped... then recovery time was tough, but we didn't mind, our baby was home and was doing better... so what I'm trying to say is to keep it positive, give a lot of love to your little one and keep your hopes up... good chance your vet and you will pull her thru it...

As for recommendations, you did good about getting rid of all the stuff, remember, plates too... disinfect crates and areas were she used to hang out, like garden or garage or so... and keep a close eye to Lucas, there are good chances he's not getting it, but better safe than sorry...!!!

Good luck and hugs for all of you!!!

I spoke with a woman that bought a pup from a pet store and he got over the parvo. I think their chances may not be as good if you wait too long, but you took immediate action, so I think you have a very good shot at your dog recovering.

Good luck and keep us updated!!!

Wow, that is really sad. I am so sorry to hear that. Don't feel guilt of not taking your dog to the vet in time. The shots would more than likely not have helped at that point.

*hugs to you and your pups*

We just went through Parvo 10 weeks ago with our Samson (we'd only had him for 4 days). It is definitely good that you caught it early - if he's staying at the vet/hospital, he has a really good chance. We treated at home (IV fluids and the works) for the first week and then I had to take him back to the SPCA where we'd gotten him so they could try for 24 more hours to save him (we couldn't afford to hospitalize as the estimate were around $3500). I thought I was saying goodbye - so hard. I called the next morning and he was eating and hadn't thrown up! He's been on the up swing ever since.... The SPCA actually retested for the Parvo and it was out of his system two days after his worst day of illness.

It was definitely a tough fight, but worth it. I spent the time while he was away bleaching everything on the first level of our house (where he'd been) that could be bleached. All of his linens are now several shades lighter, but we got the Parvo out.

As far as vaccinations go, Samson had already had his first round of vaccinations, but had apparently already been exposed to the Parvo, so don't beat yourself up about that. You are doing everything right now and will be ready to welcome a healthy puppy home when it's time.

The biggest bummer after they're healthy is the fact that you have to quarantine for a couple weeks and they miss that socialization time, but since you have another dog you are in better shape than we were. Our puppy was around a couple adult dogs before he started to get sick (and they'd come in our yard) and both of them were fine, so your older one probably will be, too. Just keep in mind that you should not allow any puppies in your yard for at least 6 months as Parvo tends to hang around for that long and the only way to get it out is to take your lawn down to the soil and start over - yikes!

Last thing, be careful when you do vaccinate - we think Samson may have gotten vaccinosis (unsure if it's at all related to the Parvo) - and has had 2 seizures, so we are treating with Lyssin & Thuja, which a holistic vet may recommend when he has his vaccinations just to make sure they don't overwhelm his immune system.

Hope this info is helpful! I know exactly what you're dealing with - I was just there.... I'm sure everything will be fine and pretty soon you'll be pulling out your hair over typical puppy "issues", like me!

I am also very sorry to hear about Chloe's condition. And like everyone else has already said, you are a very good parent. You took in this poor dog and gave her a very loving home and this will help in the recovery. Take care and give updates!

Thank you all.
I called the vet's office today and they said Chloe was responding to the IV fluids and all that really good! :D And I should be able to take her home tomorrow or maybe the day after tomorrow if everything keeps going like it is. I got all new stuff for Lucas and Chloe yesterday. When I brought new toys Lucas was really happy. LOL.

Thank you. I didn't even think of their plates!! Lucas is still as healthy as ever....Thank god!!!

Thank you very much. Chloe isn't exactly a puppy though. She is a 5 yr old great dane we got from the Humane society. I will have to make a post in the Holistic forum to ask about the vaccinations. Thank you. I'm not really sure how I am gonna pay for the vet bill, but I'll find a way.

Thank you all for all the support and care. It means a lot. Yesterday I was in a panic and just freaking out. But after reading the posts from everyone and all your nice words and encouragements I feel sooo much better!! THANK YOU!!

Oh wow! I'm so happy that he's doing well. I read through this thread remembering what my friend went through. She didnt' know what to do and couldn't afford to keep her puppy hospitalized. the doctors at the shelter didnt' think the puppy would make it. For a whole week the puppy was barely eating and would just throw up. She had to give him up or pay for the hospital stay which she couldn't afford. I think the puppy made it through at least. She felt aweful but relieved the puppy was ok.

It's such a horrible thing to go through. I could imaging how you felt while your new family member was sick. He is a brave dog as are you for waiting it out. I know he'll be welcome home for the second time!

Wow, I guess Chloe's huge, then. I guess I just assumed she was a puppy because Parvo is considered a puppy illness rarely affecting older dogs. That's mainly due to the fact that they are vaccinated against it when young, though so if you are the first mommy she's had covering all those bases, then she would be susceptible just like a puppy would.

The good news is that none of this will affect her growth and she should make that much quicker of a recovery since her immune system is mature. Sorry you had to go through all of that, but Chloe is blessed to have a great home to recover completely in! I'm excited for you to have her back home....

Thank you all again for your encouragements. Chloe is gonna be coming home tomorrow. They want to keep her there to make sure everything is gonna be ok.

Cecile I hope your cat gets better. What is wrong with her/him?

Lucas seems to be a little restless. He keeps pacing around the house looking in all the rooms. He is also just grabbing his toys and throwing them around and then waiting for someone to come and play. It's sad. I'm not really sure if he is missing Chloe, but from my prespective it sure seems like it.

Ashley, I wasn't so fortunate with my cat, I made a seperate post about her which you will find elsewhere in the chat forum. Sadly, she had many odd problems that we were treating, but nothing showed up on her tests & nothing made any sense to the vet, or us. We lost her yesterday. Fortunately it looks like Chloe is going to be just fine!

Give your other dog lots of love and attention - he's gotten used to the Chloe being around and knows something is up. I've had to make sure my other two cats have gotten equal time while dealing with Missy's problems, too. And when I had an elderly dog a year and a half ago my two younger dogs didn't know what to do - I had my handsfull
trying to keep them from getting depressed. Even if the animals don't seem to get along, they sense our moods, and they need some up time with us during these trying times.

I just read your post about Missy and I am soo sooo sorry. It really made me cry to think of something like that happening. I know it's frustrating when all our medical science can't find anything when something is obviously wrong. Just try and hang in there. Missy and you are in my thoughts.

Somehow everything works out the way it's supposed to. I am really glad that Chloe is home and doing well. The bills will find a way to get paid. I have helped a few dogs with what I thought was parvo, and haven't always had good results. I just wish everyone would vaccinate!!
I had a rough job today, I'll post about it in another post.
