My little girl Lina vomited 5 times earlier today. The color was canary yellow and all liquid and foamy. My poor little princess:( ...she doesn't eat in the morning with the exception of a half Innova Health Food Bar. This morning she wouldn't even touch it. Anyways, I gave her a little honey once she settle a bit and a tiny piece of ripe banana. After a half an hour, I fed her her kibble mixed with plain yogurt and no more vomiting ( keeping my fingers crossed. ) Can someone tell me if her vomiting was due to an empty stomach? I called the vet's office to make sure it wasn't anything serious. They told me to watch her after I gave her half of her food to see if the vomiting continue, if it did, to bring her in. She's never done this before:confused: I haven't been feeling good for the past couple of days, could it be she senses I'm not well?

Mugsy did this once, and it was after I discovered he had licked up his own urine after peeing his crate. Could that be a possibility?

Nala goes through this "vomiting phases" too, she has gone through three already at almost 1 yr old... she would have the same kind of vomit, something white-yellowish and foamy with no traces of food in it, she always did it early in the mornings, right after waking up when I took her potty... I have not a certain answer but I can tell you it was nothing, some said she maybe drank too much water on an empty stomach, vet also told me maybe it was because there was too much time between her meals (7am and 7pm). I moved her meals (11am, 10pm, snack around 2-3pm) and cut the water intake around 6pm... it was ok, she didn't vomit again... then one morning I found the weird vomit again... she ate ok that day and that was it... so I guess it can be a lot of things, as long as she continues eating and the vomit isn't lasting for days, its ok...

Sampson vomits also. I think it's caused by him having a sensitive stomach and possibly the smell of any type of cleaning product I may use in the house. Nine times out of ten if his stomach is queasy he won't eat his breakfast (not even treats) and when we go out he'll eat grass, throw up and then he's fine. His bile is usually a frothy yellow liquid like Lina's, but with a few strands of grass mixed in. Have you noticed Lina being ill around the same time you have used cleaning products/deoderizers, aything like that? Do you watch to make sure she's not getting into things she shouldn't be either on walks or in the house? Bland food, such as rice, is also good for dogs with upset stomaches.

As puppies, both of my shih tzus had early morning vomiting of foamy yellowish bile. (One of them also had projectile vomiting but that is another story...) A small snack before bed time often helps with this. Check with your vet, but a quarter tab of regular 10mg pepcid before bed time can also help prevent this if it happens regularly. Or after they vomit if they still seem to not feel well. Their tummies get too empty.
Also, shih tzus tend to have very sensitive digestive systems so try (I said try, I know how hard it is) to keep them from eating stuff outside. I don't know where you are, but in the northeast, spring is finally beginning and the tree pollen will begin falling and then the blossoms, people will use all kinds of nasty chemicals on their lawns and on sidewalks, and commercially tended properties (like our townhouse complex) will spray all kinds of crap that is supposedly ok for pets, but really isn't. Round up is regularly sprayed along our curbs on Thursdays, and last year, my pups threw up like clockwork every Friday until I figured out what was going on. I have to wipe off their little feet every time we go outside and on Thursdays, I carry them down to the dog walk area so they don't sniff and lick along the curbs. The household chemicals mentioned in another post also bother my girls, so we tend to stick to natural cleaning products (vinegar and water cleans everything from floors to windows and appliances) wherever possible.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Lina hasn't vomited since this morning. She ate both her lunch and dinner with gusto. Hopefully, the worse is over. :)

hi maria,
chloe has vomitted the same yellow foamy bile on occassions and its usually when she doesn't eat her breakfast. i have sometimes hand fed her to get something in her belly. now she's better that bailey's with us because he devours his food and she sees that.

Jesse, I can see that both my babies get bored with their same old food, that's why I started to add a bit of plain yogurt to their food, it's the only way they will eat it all. This morning I gave them their kibble with yogurt and they both finished it in less than three minutes, licking their mouths and looking for more.
I remember when you were concerned about Clhoe not eating her food, glad to hear that Bailey has improved her appetite. Lina and Giotto used to fight for the same bowl ( even thou I would give them each a dish ), they don't any more. I guess they both know that there is plenty of food for both of them. I too was hand feeding Lina for a while...I stopped since I didn't want her to get into the habit.

Maria and Jesse,
How far apart are each of your Tzus? Were your older ones a little jealous at first with the new babies coming in?

Susan,
My shih tzus will be 7 months old on April 9, brother and sister from the same litter. Giotto gets jealous when I play with Lina, she is a bit shy, my little princess.

My dog has thrown up yellow bile from not eating breakfast when she didn't like the food I had her own. It stopped and she rarely throws up bile anymore since she likes her new food.
Sometimes a late night snack may be recommended or feeding the dog early in the a.m. I don't know if there are other reasons for it.

Grace--Lina didn't vomit because she doesn't like her food, actually it's the same food ( INnova Puppy ) they had been eating it since I brought them home, except that they are now on the Innova Adult food. Shih Tzus are known to be finicky eaters, mine are no different than the rest. Yes, I could be making them my Italian specialties, I'm sure they would gooble it down, but it wouldn't be prudent nor responsible on my part.
I don't see the need to change their food, although from all your postings, I can see you are a can food advocate ( no offence intended.) I prefer to feed them the best kibble I can afford. It was a one time incident with Lina. She is back to normal and eating a bit more in the am.

hi susan,
my shih tzu's are 7 months apart. i got chloe first at 9 1/2 weeks and the day before she turned 1 yr old i got bailey, who was 4 months old. chloe didn't really show signs of jealousy because i never, ever give attention to one without immediately grabbing the other. that is a RULE in my house that my husband and daughter also follow. its funny because if chloe isn't in the room and i grab bailey to give him some love and chloe walks in. she'll just stop in her tracks and just look at me, so i'll immediately put him down grab her and tell her she's my perfect girl, with lots of kisses.
my goodness, its like having children.

Jesse,
Does hubby get the attention, too? I sometimes think mine is jealous of the attention I give to Finn.

Maria, I'm not saying to change your dog's food or that they don't like it. I would have no idea. I just said what happened with my dog, and really my point was that she had not eaten and that is why she threw up yellow bile. I did not suggest a change in diet, just to add a late night snack.
As for my preference for canned food, I never tell anyone to feed canned over hard food. I just mention it sometimes because I can't help people when they want to compare prices since I'm not familiar with what hard food costs, but I am familiar with ingredients.

jill, my husband is ok with it because he's very affectionate with our babies as well. actually the one that gets jealous is my 6 yr old daughter. in the beginning she would see me hugging and kissing chloe and she would come over to get a hug. at one point she said asked why did i give chloe so much love, that was my hint that she was a little jealous. i just explained that they need lots of love attention because they depend on us for everything. but she's better now with the attention we give the babies. she understands now.
