My 4 month old has terrible gas. He is on California Natural puppy food and is fed 1/2 cup in the morning and evening with a little chicken broth mixed in. Is it normal for puppies to go through a stage of gas or should I try another dog food? My 7 year old is on the same regiman, (CN for adult dogs), but doesn't have the same problem. :teeth:
My dogs are a finicky eaters so that's why I add a little chicken broth to their food. Is that okay? I've tried yogurt and cottage cheese, but they had a tendency to make their breath/mouth area smell a little sour. I've also tried the IAMS gravy/sauce, which they both seem to love, but I'm not sure how good that is for them (no matter what I add to the food, the pup still has the gas...)

Please share your thoughts and suggestions.:help2:

Teresa-- California Natural is design for puppies with sensitive tummies, and it's highly digestable. I wouldn't give my puppies the Iams gravy/sauce, it's loaded with artificial ingredients... this is probably the cause of the gas. Have you tried just giving him his food alone for 2weeks to see if the gas is still there? If it is, he maybe allergic to chicken. I would then switch him to the Lamb and Rice formula.

I feed my puppies Innova Adult food, mixed in with a tiny bit of plain yougurt. I also brush their teeth twice a week. Their breath is never stinky nor sour.

Teresa-

I have been told that gas is often a sign of a food intolerence (Ginger, my min pin mix gets HORRIBLE gas whenever she has anything with wheat in it, I am fairly certain she has an allergy), so it is possible your puppy may have an allergy to the protein or carb source in the food. CN is supposed to be an excellent food, but if he is allergic to either chicken or lamb (depending which variety you have him on, I believe they make a puppy C&R and L&R), that could be causing the gas. Have you thought of switching to the other version and seeing if that helps? Dogs do develop allergies, so even if the gas only started recently, that could be the problem. Something to think about, and I would stay away from the Iams sauce as well :dogrun:

Thank you for the tips. I'll try a different flavor of the dry, alone and see what happens...

Bogart has terrible gas and I feed him a high quality food (Solid Gold). Maybe it is just a bulldog thing (bad gas), but I am going to talk to my vet about food intolerance that Sarah mentioned.

I've always heard that bulldogs tend to have pretty consistent gas. Good luck with that!

Maple was on Evolve puppy with no problems. When we switched her to Evolve adult, she had incosistent poops (sometimes solid, sometimes runny -- ick) and was passing a ton of wind.

It was a quality food, and after 3 months, we switched again to Chicken Soup. The result was good, consistent stools, and less gas.

Sometimes a food might be good, it just doesn't agree with them. Like me and Indian food.

Thanks everyone! I've only been adding a little water to Zeke's CN and he's MUCH better! It must have been the broth!

Chicken broth is okay if it's diluted because of it's high salt content. You can also try beef bouilllion diluted.

I feed my puppy Solid Gold as well and he has a little gas. I wouldn't call it terrible since he doesn't fart all day, but boy when he does...
