Does anyone else out there have a standard Dachshund? My Emma is about 1 1/2 yrs. old, I got her from a shelter and they thought she was between 8 - 10 months old when I got her last fall. She replaced a miniature schnauzer who pass away at a young age of 5, I was totally devastated with that and could not be "dogless" any longer so 3 weeks later I got Emma and she has been such a joy!!!!!
The Vet said they are of the hound group and listening to her bark and howl sometimes I guess he was right. My biggest problem is her being hungry all the time, she weighed 19.5 lbs. when I got her, (she is a standard) she now weights 28 lbs! She gets about 3/4 cup of dry kibble twice a day and it is gone in 30 seconds!!! I don't think she even chews, then she is back in five minutes licking out that bowl, she has been all checked out so no worms or anything like that. I thought about cutting down on her kibble and replacing it with vegetables, (cooked carrots, peas, green beans, etc) I am wondering if that is a good idea?
any feedback would be appreciated. thanks!!!

oh my, have you talked about this with your vet? it could be she has a medical condition or it is possible that before she went to the shelter she was neglected and food was something that she never got enough of..
you can feed her veggies it won't hurt her at all provided she will eat them, some dogs don't care for veggies...what kind of food do you feed her? you might want to look at the list of ingrediants and if it is mostly fillers (no meat in the first 3 of the list) you might look at changing her food, there are several threads in the nutrition thread that talk extensively about food available and which ones are the better brands. if it is her food it might just be that her body is not getting something it needs
how much water does she drink? like humans dog will feel hungry if they don't drink enough water...(or so i have heard)
does her vet say she is overweight? with dachshunds you have to be careful do to them having the long bodies, being overweight can cause major back problems...

I feed her Natural Balance Duck & Potato because that is what my Schnauzer was eating because of allergies and I thought it was a really good food, she drinks plenty of water. the vet does say she is may five pounds overweight, she does not guard her food at all, I can take the bowl away and she won't growl or anything, the vet said that hounds are prone to being the type that will eat everything in the bowl, she does like just about any type of vegetable or apples, strawberries, bananas, haven't really seen much she won't eat!

Hi Emma & Emma's Mom, Welcome to Doggie Bag. Ok, you will want to slow Emma down. there are a few ways to do this. They do make bowls to help this:

Or you can put a large ball--not huge, but maybe something heavy you can put down into the food. the idea is that she will neeed to work her way around it to eat. I would cut back on the grain, and add some more vegetables to her meal, since she is overweight.
She needs to be slowed down, although bloat is a problem with large breed dogs, Dachsunds are also susceptible to it.
Can't wait to see a picture of her!

or another way to slow her down if you have the time is hand feed her a few pieces of kibble at a time as well...but Alberta is right
and we would love to see pics of your furkid

I was going to say the same as Luciann. That will help her relearn a better way to eat. To actually taste the food and chew (every now and then). Once she's convinced that she'll get the food every day, she may slow down on her own.
Of course, do let the vet know in case there is a medical problem behind her gorging.
I grew up with dachshunds. They ARE hounds. they are also called badger hounds
Dachshund
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The dachshund is a short-legged, elongated dog breed of the hound family. The breed's name is German and literally means "badger dog," from (der) Dachs, badger, and (der) Hund, dog. While classified as a hound in English speaking countries, some consider the classification to be in error, speculating that it arose from the fact that the German word hund is similar to the English word hound. In fact many dachshunds, especially the wire haired sub type, exhibit behavior and appearance that is far more similar to the terrier group of dogs [1]. The standard size was developed to scent, chase, and flush badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, while the miniature was to hunt rabbits. Due to the long, narrow build, they are sometimes referred to as a wiener dog. Not withstanding the German origin of the dachshund's name, within German-speaking countries the breed is known—both formally and informally—as the Dackel or Teckel.
I've also heard people refer to them as dashhounds but I think that's just people that don't know how to say it correctly.
I hope that helps.

I was going to suggest the same as Luciann and Timberwolf. Hand feeding by dropping a few pieces at a time into her bowl and wait a few moments after she eats those to drop more.
Also, where's the pictures of your long little doggy? :D
