Yesterday my ex-husband had our chocolate lab Taz put down; she would have been 12 this coming Monday. Something had happened a couple of weeks ago, and she wasn't doing well. He took her to the vet, hoping it was just an inner ear infection, but the vet felt it was something neurological - that she either had had a stroke or that she had a brain tumor. The vet put her on antibiotics and steroids and she improved slightly, but then on the weekend she took another turn for the worst and couldn't even stand up anymore. My ex said that on Sunday when she was trying to get up and couldn't, that she looked at him as if to say 'please do something to help me' and he knew that it was time to let her go. I said good-bye to her on the phone (I am in a different province now) and he said she wagged her tail. Here is a picture of Taz and her little buddy Olga when I babysat them last year. I hope Olga understands, as much as dogs can, where her friend went, and that Taz is no longer suffering.
