i'd just like to post about dogs and allergic reactions. i know it's not a holistic approach but i think it's worth saying that having an antihistiman in yr cupboard after the experience i've just had with poppy.

she came in from the garden and i noticed her chops looked a bit swollen, literally within 5 mins she was totally swollen around her face, throat and neck and was also covered in lots of lumps over her entire body. she was starting to gag and obviously couldn't breathe well. i still can't get over how quick it came up!
i keep piriton syrup in the cupboard for my son as he has mild reactions from time to time if he gets the cats in his face.
i gave poppy a dose of this as i panicked and figured it was the closest i had to an antihistiman. it got it down enough to make her more comfortable and me to get her to the vets (at 12 night that's not expensive!) the vet said that dogs can have upto 10mg of piriton as a dose(it's 2mg per 5ml) and that it's a good thing i gave it to her.
i'm guessing she ate a bumble bee as they r about now the weather is warmer but still dopey from being away all winter. thankfully she's fine now but i'm getting another bottle just incase:)

That's a good idea. Where do you get piriton syrup? I've never heard of it before.

Is piriton like benadryl or other antihistimine? Is it available in the US? Thanks for the warning, hope Poppy is ok now, Lauren

yes it's a brand of medicine over here in uk, just like benadryl. i don't know about other brands but it would be worth asking yr vet about it.

I do keep benedryl tabs in finnegan's "box of stuff". I've used it once or twice. Usually for bites or stings. Nothing as bad as what Clair mentioned.

Wow! That definitely sounds like an allergic reaction. Thank goodness you were right there and saw it happening. Smart thinking to give her the Piriton.

When Nalu was stung by a bee last month, I had posted a question about it here and Sam Aiden (the holistic advisor from DD) sent this reply:

"Homeopathically you can always carry Apis Mel, Histamine, and Detox which does get the toxin out of the system more quickly. We use our own Trauma Rescue for this type of thing as it also covers minor injuries which you could expect when you are out with your dog, cuts, muscle pulls etc."

And of course, as others have mentioned, Benadryl can be given in a dose appropriate to the weight of your dog.
