Hi,

I adopted a 2nd female rescue 2 days ago to go with my other male rescue dog.

Jackie my first dog sleeps in the lounge so I thought for the first night I would put pippa (2nd dog) in the kitchen. I think she has had a reallt bad life so far (she is only one) and she cries when I leave her.

When I put her in the kitchen she started crying and banging on the door. I couldnt help but let her in the lounge so me Jackie and Pippa slept in the lounge fine.

Last night I thought I would just let them both sleep in the lounge. I stayed with them until they were both asleep and then snuck off to bed. About 2 mins later I could hear Pippa crying and trying to get the door open. I though I should ignore this so I left her for about an hour. After of hour of listening I could bear no more so went into the lounge where I found poo everywhere including on Jackie's 'thing'. Pippa was a complete nervous wreck I felt so bad that I slept in the lounge again.

Now this cant continue so tonight I thought I would put Pippa in the kitchen again but I know that she will just cry and bang at the doors all night.

What can I do?

To help he seperation anxiety from today I have started leaving the room for a few seconds a time to try and build up the time - I am up to about a minute at the moment before she starts crying.

Please help.

if things dont change i may have to consider taking her back to the dogs home - I really dont want to do this so all suggestions would be deeply helpful

Have you considered crate training Pippa? You may not have had to do with it Jackie...you may have...I don't know, but Pippa will still be in a confined space (the crate) and still will be able to be in the same room with you (your bedroom) and be calm. I did that when I brought my poodle home and I'm able to leave her out of her crate at night now. It took a few months, but I was able to do it. It only took that long in my case because I was waiting until she was fully potty-trained before she was able to have full roam of my house.

Something to think about...

The crate might help. Years ago, we got a little pug who spent the first 3 weeks with us crying ALL night long. We were to the point that, if we couldn't get some sleep, we were going to have to give him back. I had already been advised to get a crate but was resisting. In talking to one of my friends who is a vet, she told me I really should rethink the crate method. I finally got one, and the first night in it, he slept the entire night without a sound. We would not have had 3 sleepless WEEKS if we had known that! He loved his crate and went in it alot. My current puppy has slept in a crate by my bedside since day one, and from the time we got him at 8 weeks old he has slept through the night. Of course, he was from the pound and was probably somewhat used to being closed up in his short life. He doesn't go in the crate during the day for naps on his own, but he goes in willingly when we're leaving the house and at bedtime. And he likes being in our room rather than alone.....I think.

I was told that dogs consider their crates as their dens. Both of my dogs LOVE their crates. I think it will help you out a lot!
