Do any of you have your dogs chipped? Magic has had an ident chip since I've owned her. It's a fairly simple thing to insert. I wouldn't have thought of it myself but the Rescue association insists that all dogs adopted have chips inserted. There is a national data base for these ident numbers and the registration is very inexpensive and it is good for the life of the animal.

I have my dog chipped. It was an an easy procedure. Someone told me though that you shouldn't put the little yellow tag on your dog's collar because if your dog does run away and someone found it, they could easily change the personal info using the number on your dog's tag.

That's right Hee, I have a folder with all of her records in and that's where the little yellow tag is. If she ever gets lost I always know where to find it.

Both my dog and my cat are chipped with AVID. They inserted the chip into his neck but when we had him x-rayed recently, they realized the chip had slipped down into his lower shoulder!!! This could actually cause a problem if they don't know to scan his shoulder if he was lost. The gun has to be very close to the chip to read the info. Oh well, nothing I can do now.

Interesting story though, the shelter we adopted from inserts the chips. I was filling out the paperwork with another new dog owner. Both our pups were off getting chipped. When they returned, the vet apologized because she had put 2 chips in the other persons dog. The gun did not pick up the first one when they checked so they put another one in. Now the gun is reading both and giving 2 differend ID numbers. What a mess this place was. I do not recommend Action for Animals in Latrobe, PA. They are very disorganized and that is why we wanted to adopt a dog

How strange! It's kind of nice to know that there is a way to identify them though. Magic is never out of my sight or off her leash when out and about but there is always a chance...........

chipping is now pretty commonplace over here too. if yr worried about identity of yr dog for someone who might take it's details u could try a disc like i use? it has" identichipped dog" on one side then on the other it has the first line of my address only and my mobile number. the logic being a stranger with bad intentions can't know my dogs name or full address. but in the event of an escape locally it pays to have yr house number and road as if found locally the dog can be returned without having to go to the local pound, and if we god forbid lost one of the dogs when out of the area my mobile number can be rung, and if we lost one of the ogs like that we would then be in the area searching :)

Giotto and Lina were micro-chipped when they were spayed and neutered. It's only good when submitting the information to AKC (data base) It cost me $12.50 each to register, also I can change the address if I should ever move in the future.

Hi!
By law, all dogs are required to be microchipped by the age of 5 months in Hong Kong. It's a rabies free region, so the government requires dogs to get the microchip after the rabies injection - that way they can keep tabs on which dogs have been vaccinated and which haven't. Also, you can go to the local agriculture and fisheries dept to get it done for the equivalent of 5US dollars - to make sure people actually get it done! I think it's a good idea, personally.

Sorry, I realise this doesn't really have any relevance to people living in the US, but thought I'd just share.

The breeder I got Finnegan from microchips all of their puppies. It's included in the cost.
We were at the vets once, and the vet was talking to someone about microchipping their dog. He saw that we were there, and knew that Finn was chipped, and scanned him, and it brought up our ID number. I think Claire has a great idea about the tag. I think I may order some like that and put it on all of Finn's collars. He has 3 different ones that we use depending on what we're doing. :D

My Maggie is micro-chipped. I had it done when she was a pup. I had taken her in for her shots and on the way out asked the vet about microchipping. The vet said they could do it right then and there, and took her in the back and did it in a matter of seconds. I did not use the yellow tag - just one more thing for my dogs to lose. With multiple dogs they are always pulling at each others collars and eventually the tags fall off and get lost. I do have regular pet ID tags on my dogs, and keep a handful of tags around to use as needed. But I like the idea of microchipping in case my dog gets lost and the collar and regular ID tag disappear.

We don't have this procedure available, the best thing I can do is get them one of those ID things to put in her collar with my general info... Once one of my dogs ran away and got lost, days after that we received a call from a really nice gentleman that found him and managed to get in touch with us because he read our number in the ID plate...

One of my dogs is chipped and one is not. I chipped my fearful dog when I got him when I was in college, I thought it was a great idea. then, when I took my big girl (when she wasn't so big) to the vet I asked about getting her chipped and the vet refused. Flat out refused. I asked him why, as I always thought it was a good idea. This is what he told me. There is no standardization of chips. there are many registries and not every registry or chip is readable by other scanning machines. He refused to place chips into pets until there was an "official" registry or a machine that would read every chip ever made. He also stated that the rate of slippage was such that most were not found by dog shelters doing a routine scan. I thought he made an interesting point. It hasn't changed my mind, I am still glad one of my babies is chipped. I just moved and I haven't really talked to my new vet yet, so I don't know what I will do with Life (big girl) regarding chipping. I just wanted to put out the opposing view point to chipping as it seems everyone agrees that chipping is good.

Thanks for the info on not putting the yellow tag on the dog. My dog was chipped at the shelter I got him from. They chip all their dogs. But I have always kept the yellow tag on his collar. I will remove it today! Maybe get one of those disc tags too - that's a good idea.

I had my vet check my chip and she was able to read it perfectly so I guess my place did a good job (fortunately).
