My puppies in heat

I asked this question a few days ago on doggiedoor.com about my 8 month old mixed breed dog. I was going to get her spayed in a couple of weeks, before she went into heat, but it seems I am too late. She has bled for about five days, but not a whole lot. I was just wondering if a little blood was normal or not. If there are things I need to look for to know if I should take her to the vet please let me know.

A small amount of blood is normal. We used to say one week coming in, one week in and one week going out. That was the rule in our home when our bitch was in heat. A little swelling in the vulva area is also normal.

Yes, this is normal. The only time you should worry is if she seems to run a fever, or the discharge is yellowish-greenish.

Pyometria would be your biggest worry, although it's very rare for such a young pup to develop it.
