How often should a dog be shampooed? Mine is a long haired chihuahua mix and she loves to roll in stinky stuff. That means bathing her at all hours! Of course I'd have to bathe her if she rolled in poop but sometimes she just smells funky but doesn't appear to have anything stuck in her coat. Do any of you know of a dry doggie shampoo?

I have tried a 'dry' shampoo that is actually in a pump and comes out as a foam that you rub into the fur. It doesn't really clean the dog, just kinda 'freshens' him up. I think it is made by Wahl.

I have tried a couple different kinds and they all make my girls itch something fierce. I now use baby wipes - the alcohol free sensitive skin ones - Pampers makes one kind, or the seventh generation environmentally friendly, no weird chemicals, baby wipes that also work well but are a little pricier. It helps get off any dirt they may have picked up, and leaves a fresh smell. I also use them to wipe the pads of their feet and their paws when they come in from a walk.

Valerie, that's a great idea. I purchase the moisterizing doggie wipes sold at Petsmart. They seem to get the dirt off my dogs pretty well and leave them smelling fresh.

I have a recipe for dry shampoo:
1/2 tp 1 cup bran or oatmeal put on cookie sheet and put oven on low for 5 minutes. No need to bake, just warm slightly (not too hot to touch). Rub the grain into the fur with a towel or wash cloth, especially on the dirtier areas. Brush all the grain out.

I have Standard Poodles, and they get bathed every other week. I haven't considered a dry shampoo - they don't ever have that doggie smell - but they need to have clean skin and hair, so in the tub they go!

My family and I live out in the country. We have a springer spaniel who's just over a year old and man does she like to roll in stinky stuff. Just today she rolled in something nasty and mom said that when they put her out on the deck she could smell s'mo all the way in the back of the house. We just use puppy shampoo on our dogs because it's gentle enough to use as often as we need to bathe s'mo and rupert is really small anyway. (he's a cavelier king charles spaniel.)

Lesly,
Just wondering...how do your two not get the doggie smell? lol...Precious is just 10 pounds and comes in smelling like she needs doggie deodorant sometimes! And she doesn't roll in anything...it's just from her running around and playing with Sally.

I have to say that very seldom do my two actually start smelling, other than the day frodo rolled in i don't know what.
i bathe them every couple of months since they just need one anyway

I wonder why some smell and some don't! Linus really just smells like a stuffed animal when he needs a bath. I bathe him once a month--unless he has rolled on some poor dead mole. Bella, his best and only friend, smells like she crawled out of a dump, and that's just a few days away from having had a bath :( , however her skin is sensitive and she scratches a lot. Just switched her food.
I do notice that Linus' feet smell like fritos for some reason.

lol, fritos, eh? Makes you want to secretly videotape him while you are away, doesn't it?
I bathe Precious and Sally once a month. They REALLY smell after I give them their flea treatment, but sometimes Precious will come in after that bath at some point and smell like doggie sweat my mom says. That's why I said she needs doggie deodorant. I know it's really bad when I can smell her because my sense of smell is pretty bad...like, in order to smell a scented candle I have to put it directly to my nose while other people can usually smell it from a longer distance.
