Hi,
We have two dogs, a Black Lab and a Beagle/lab mix. The Lab is 3 years old and the Beagle 2.5 years old. They are inside dogs that have a fenced yard to play in also. Lately we have noticed that they both started eating poop in the yard. The Beagle, especially! We try to keep the yard free of poop, but he seems to eat it as soon as he finds some. He used to not like to be around fresh poop when he was younger and would walk around it if he encouter any. Is this normal dog behavior? It's gross, frankly and I want to know if we can do something to stop it.

Thanks and btw, thank you for offering this forum. I was heartsick when I saw that doggiedoor.com had collapsed. What would us dog lovers do!

Hi Gaby~

Yep, poop eating is pretty common. The best deterent is to pick up the poop right away so the pups don't get a chance to eat it.

I think all the replies to this post were wiped out when the forum moved....hopefully the original poster had a chance to read all the replies.

I know how you feel. I can't go outside with my dogs all the time to watch for poop eating. The one time I didn't watch my little girl came in with a mouth full of poop. I put her by the sink and turned on the water , put her mouth under the water to try and clean her mouth up a little. It is so nasty because she stands next to her sister while her sister is pooping and lick it when it comes out. Sorry to be so gross but I wanted you to get the full effect.

I know that there is some stuff that you can get from the vet to help stop the problem of poop eating. I think it is used for a limited time in hopes of changing the behaviour. I can't remember what it is called, but I'm sure the vet would know what you were talking about. I can ask my sister (a vet) if anyone wants.
