I was just wondering what kind of brush would be best for my long-haired guy. A comb is too fine, and a 'slicker' gets tangled. I've been using my own 'pick' for curly hair, but want to buy one just for him. In the picture that Francesca posted of Muttzy and her neice, Muttzy's hair is so nice. I was wondering if a soft or hard bristle brush would be good?

Hi Sheryl

I've got a long haired girl too and found the best brush for her was the medium steel pinned brush. It separates the hair without scratching or irritating the skin.

I was going to suggest the same thing that Judy uses. You can also get a rake if the fur gets tangled easily. Make sure it's a rake with a sharp edge on one side. It's not REALLY sharp but it is sharper so it can get through the tangles with less pain. A comb will hurt if it's tangled but if you are brushing everyday and there usually isn't any matts, then a wide steel pinned comb or a medium pinned brush will work. Brushes are more comfortable but the wider combs do work as far as gettign through longer coats of fur.

Thanks so much.... now at least I have an idea what to look for. Doggie Bag forum is a great place to get info.

When you get a pin brush, make sure there's no little ball on the ends, or it'll tear the hair. Even with human pin brushes, those type break the hair - I've started using dog brushes! LOL I love Chris Christensen's pin brushes. Spendy, but very nice.

Thanks to all your help, I bought Sailor a medium pinned brush today. I could only find combs that were too fine. But I also took him to the groomers, and she went a little crazy! I know that he had matts on his legs, and she said that she had to go really short to get them off, so she went really short all over! I don't know what kind of cut you'd call it.... his ears and face are still longer and terrier-ish, and his tail is long, but everywhere else is really short. He doesn't look like the same doggie! I will do lots of brushing so he gets used to the brush when his hair is short and doesn't pull or tangle. I guess his hair will grow out soon enough. I think I might need to buy him a little jacket to wear for the next few cold months before he grows out!
