I have read several times about using liver as a training treat. I don't even cook liver for my family but an considering getting some for Sandy. She loves the Bil-Jac liver treats but they are expensive (at least at the rate she goes through them :D ) and the only place I can buy them is a 40 minute drive from here. Anyway, my question for those of you who use liver, is how do you prepare it? You do cook it I hope! I'm not sure I will be able to fix it but I'm thinking about it because I know she'd love it.

Hi Stefie,

You may want to ask this in the food section. You may get more replies and advice on how to make it. You can do a google search on how to make liver treats.

As for Bil Jac food/treats, read the label: loaded with fillers, addictives, preservatives, corn, mollasses, etc. I would rather make my own treats.

I remember there was a discussion on DD about making our own treats, I believe, and the recipes for some of them. I didn't print any out--figured I would always have acceess to them I do have one at home for Tuna Brownies--I can't take credit for the recipe but Linus loves it. And I am shoveling treats into him all of the time. I'll dig it out and post it. What other recipes does anyone have?

Liver Cake
Approx. 375g of Liver, 2 eggs and 2-4 cloves garlic.

Whiz in a food processor - add in 1 cup of Self-Raising flour. Spread out thinly on a large baking sheet. Bake for 20-30 minutes in a moderate oven. Cool and chop. Freezes well.
Bon Appetite Fur babies!

This recipie I got from caninegroup.com, I think is the website of Susan Dillon (if I confused the advisor, a million apollogies!!!). I tried this one and my dogs loved it... to get harder treats you can lower the heat of the oven and leave the cut treats for another 30 mins or so, they get hard and are easy to manage...

Here is a web site I got from my dog club. It has all kinds of treats. Finnegan loves the Peanut Butter treats for dogs and people. It's really simple, too.

Wow, even more recipes I love it. Linus will love the peanut butter bones, Jill. And the liver cakes are really perfect training treats. Here is the one for Tuna Brownies, I took it off Helix Fairweather's training site. I made one change, use 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour--because I had some around, rather than just using white flour.

2 cans of tuna packed in water, drained
2 eggs
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 cup white flour
1/2 cup wheat flour

Mix together, Press or roll flat on a cookie sheet to about 1/4" thick. I flour my hands, since I both mix and press with my hands. Bake at 250
for 30 minutes. Cut into 1/4" cubes and refrigerate or freeze.

I split them into small freezer bags, keep one in refrigerator and the others in freezer, usually get about 4 bags per recipe. They are soft, and easy to handle, and easy to pop in Linus' mouth if he is beginning to get reactive. They don't crumble. And they are smelly enough to catch his interest.

Here is a site with a LOT of dog treat recipes! I have never tried any (my dog is allergic to EVERYTHING) but hopefully some will work out for you

Liver is a good source of vitamin A and iron as well as Omega 3's and Omega-6. Yet you do want to be careful with how much liver you feed your dog. The liver, as an organ, has the job of removing the toxins from the animals body that it was taken from. Therefore, unless you buy it from a good organic source, the liver will most likely harbor a lot of toxic waste. My dog Sonny is on a raw diet, and he eats 5-10% raw organ meat in his diet. But Chances are that your dogs kibble already has a certain % of organ meat in it, so you probably do not want to use liver as a regular/daily training treat with him.

I have used this site for a lot of Sonny's treats:
http://sitstay.com/

They have a lot of reasonable priced treats that are actually pretty good. If you use this site, just look for the treats that have as few fillers (grains) as possible, as well as sugars, dyes, and preservatives. Most all treats listed on the site have an ingrediant list.. which is really helpful.

A big thank you to everyone for sharing your recipes. I'm looking forward to making my own treats. I know Sandy will love them.

Thank you Missy for the warning on feeding to much liver. I would have never thought about that!
