I have a neighbor that is looking for a dog. She would get one from the animal shelters but because of her allergy to dogs we both feel it best that she get a breed specific dog with no mixtures. She doesn't want a small dog so I suggested a standard poodle. She thought that would be great because she looks forward to making the dog look pretty with hair cuts and painted nails. Poodles are great for that ;). Anyhow I have taken on the task of looking for a standard poodle breeder. She wants a show dog quality dog to take to shows and possibly show the dog seriously. She also prefers male over female.
Does anyone know of any standard poodle breeders for show dogs? She seems willing to go anywhere to get the dog or have someone send her a puppy. But she lives in North Carolina if anyone knows of a standard poodle breeder in the area...that would be the most convenient. But again, she's willing to travel if necessary.
What I don't know is if she prefers black, apricot, or white fur.

Why doesn't she check with the poodle club of america or the one in her state?

Also, has she considered a rescue? There must be a standard poodle rescue somewhere that maybe the poodle club knows about.

Well from my understanding she's looking to possibly show the dog and getting a poodle from the poodle rescue might not be such a good idea. The poodles from the rescue might not have the papers needed to prove the dogs background and parenting not to mention purity. One of the things needed for show dogs is also their personalities and upbringing from what I know. I personally am not into showing dogs (although I do enjoy watching the dog shows on TV) but if that's what she wants to do, who am I to say otherwise.
I'm more of a rescue person but for her needs, a purebred show dog poodle is what she needs. Thanks for the link :)

Lesly Stevens has two standard poodles, so maybe you could ask her? She seems to know a lot about them, and Im sure she could point you in the direction of a good poodle breeder.

There should be standard poodle rescues out there, I just did a quick search on petfinder and found quite a few purebred standard poodles.
I suggest you go that route rather than through a breeder, but I tend to be a stickler for rescues.
I wish you luck!

I'm not sure you understand. I'm not the one looking for a poodle. However my neighbor is looking for a show dog poodle. She's interested in showing the dog which is why a rescue is not the best option. She'd need the papers and the knowledge of the poodle's backround. I am with you all the way about going to rescues and even shelters. They are the best option when looking for a family dog, but she is interested in showing her dog in competitions and a rescue just isn't the best choice for her needs.
Kinberly, Thank you very much. I"ll talk to Lesley about poodle breeders. :)

I'd be happy to provide the name of a breeder to your neighbor. I know of several, all of whom I "met" on a SPoodle group and have "known" for 4 yrs., many of whom I've met in person and have become friends with, and all have Champion after Champion in their lines, and pedigrees several generations back. As to color, they have blacks, blues, creams, and whites. Red and deep apricot are beginning to make some headway in the show ring, but I know of only one breeder, personally, if she's looking for those colors. I don't know anyone who breeds brown spoos.
That being said, these breeders are very selective of who their puppies go to, whether they're show prospects or not. So, your neighbor should be prepared, and be able to provide references (vet, groomer, and others).
Caring for a Standard Poodle takes time, patience, and $$$$ ! Especially if you're growing show coat! They are marvelous companions, well known for their intelligence, grace, and sense of humor! As with any breed, a deep committment is required, and careful consideration should be made before bringing home a SPoodle puppy.
You're correct in saying that a rescue would normally not be suitable for the conformation show ring, but there is also obedience, agility, and so much more. My (rehome/rescue) Bo was a former show dog, whose career was interrupted when he nearly died from being bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider. Show coat cut down, his owner lost interest in him, and, fortunately, he ended up with me. His breeder was horrified when she found out about him, and she also has a policy of taking back her spoos for any reason, any time. But, I promised her that Bo would be well taken care of, and dearly loved by Maddy and me. So, I got a wonderful companion and a great new friend all in one deal!

Thank you so much! I'll also talk to my neighbor about what color she's looking into. I'll also try to get a sense of how serious she is about it since it does take a lot of work and she's a working woman so her time might be a little limited. :)

***sheepish grin***
sorry, I tend to jump on the rescue bandwagon...there are just so many...I did know it wasn't for you, but missed the whole "showing" part of your post. From what I hear from people who show, it is a ton of work, but worth it to them. I hope your neighbor gets the dog of her dreams and cares for that dog as much as everyone on this site cares for their own dogs.
p.s. Standard poodles are a dog I put on my list of "someday" dogs. I have always wanted one...someday. :)

It's hard to say. She'd treat the dog very well but as far as how much work she'll put into actually showing the dog? ...we'll see. But because she wants the option, she'll have to spend the bucks on a show dog puppy. She's an animal lover like I am and a former vet tech so I don't doubt she'll take very good care of the dog as a family pet or otherwise.
I myself have one rescue shepherd mix from a no-kill shelter and a rejected pure bred siberian husky I adopted from a show dog breeder. I hate saying rejected husky becasue she's beautiful as a woolie (extra fluffy)...even her breeder loved her but couldn't take care of her because of her work. I adore both my girls. My shep X is the playful nuturer in the family and the husky is the needy observer. My husky is a little spoiled so I call her the princess sometimes. I could go on...but I won't. I just love talking about them ;)

What about a Miniature Poodle? Not too small and not too big...I don't know. I have a toy and I like the fact that she will look like a puppy for quite a few years. I was originally looking for a blue because I LOVE the coloring, but I found a breeder of creams and got Precious.
My grandmother's neighbor has a black Standard Poodle and she is absolutely gorgeous! I don't know why I am telling you because the dog won't be for you...just throwing it out there I guess! I haven't been on in such a long time!

Thanks for the idea but she doessn't want a small dog. she wants a big dog. But since she's allergic to dogs, a standard poodle is really her only option for the size she's looking for.
Actually the more she thinks about it the more she really wants a poodle. She has a friend that has one and she absolutely adores her dog.

Lesley,
I left you a private message on information on what poodle my neighbor is looking for.
I might as well mention it here though.
She's looking for either a black or red standard male poodle puppy. She's already gotten word about a litter of black standards that will be ready soon but is thinking a recommendation to a poodle breeder might be the best way to go. Right now she's more attracted to a black poodle but would like to consider a red poodle because they aren't as common and they look really beautiful. She's looing for male mainly because she doesn't want to have to be concerned with breeding the dog. She'd rather supply the male. She's also concerned with humping so she said she'd prefer to neuter him. I'm working on that one with her. She needs to know that both male and female may do that. Humping isn't necessarily only for non-neutered males and even those not neutered don't always hump. If they do, they may hump after getting neutered anyways depending on the reason for humping in the first place.
Well beyond that somewhat graphic problem, she's really looking forward to showing the dog in competition. She has a friend that has a standard poodle and has always liked that dog. She's really looking forward to owning a poodle.

Sorry I didn't see your message! <duh>
Well, if she's going to show the dog, he can't be neutered! Only intact dogs are allowed to show in conformation.
I'll go read your message now!

She's narrowed down her choices to black Standard Poodle. Let me know if you have any info on breeders in the NC area preferably. PM me please :)
Thank you very much!
