don't know if it would work for u? we invested in some doggy car seatbelt/harness which are anchored to straps to our boot floor. they get clipped in when we leave and it holds them to one place safely and stops them barging out as we open up the car :)

I travel from Michigan to Florida and back every year. It's a two day drive, eleven hours each day. My two year old sheltie goes with us. She has her own seatbelt harness and I can't say that she likes the ride, but it she doesn't complain. I give her pet eze just before we take off each morning and we stop frequently for breaks and to stretch our legs. She is offered water and food at each stop because I don't feed her before we start out. The car is sooooo packed I can't afford any doggie tummy upsets. I do desensitize her before the long trip by taking her for short rides in the car-(20-30 minutes) for about a week prior to our long trip. Hope this helps you.

I usually wear Blackie out before we go one long road trips that way he sleeps most of the way. I take him to the park and throw the toys for him for as long as he can.

I agree a seatbelt is a good idea, but if your dog is like mine and doesn't like wearing harnesses than I would try one of those hammocks. I had one for awhile, but it was a poor quality one and the zipper broke so I have thrown it out. You could also lay a sheet down on the back seat and give her a stuffed Kong or one of those filled bones to keep her occupied.

I think if a car's air bag went off, it may kill your dog as it would a small child sitting in the front seat.

I ended up making a hammock for like 1/2 the price of what they're sold for. While it works great and helps save my seats, it doesn't keep the monsters in the back.

The harness/seat belt is probably your best bet. I haven't actually used mine, but am getting to the point I need to with my little dog. So far I've lucked out that both dogs really love to travel, it's just the little one likes to stand on the arm rest in the front and drool over your shoulder that's annoying.
