Ok, I have a 11 month old beagle... she was a very good dog, with her ups and downs but nothing too bad you couldn't fix, she destroyed stuff but if you took your time and teach her she would stop... now it seems blank has gone into her head and she suffered a HUGE setback, this has been going on for a week or so (no major changes in ANYTHING, in fact, we couldn't be more normal than we are now). The thing is she started shredding the newspaper every morning (she stopped that months ago), she chewed to the ground a hose (never did that), destroyed around 4 or 5 pots and ate the plants (she stopped doing that months ago), she is acting really hyper (more than usual for a beagle)... so I need help, she was spayed about a month ago and everything went fine... she's growing into an adult dog, she's not supposed to be doing those puppy stuff... can anybody give me an idea on how to stop this and why is happening??? Thanks a lot... this dog never stops having issues!!!!

Maybe she is going through that "teenage stage" where she will try and test you or something. I have heard people mentioning this before. I think my dog went through a bit of that a couple months ago too. I would be more firm with her-maybe even putting her in a crate while you are gone if she continues to chew stuff up. She needs to learn that this behavior is unacceptable.

I think I'll dust off the old crate!!!! The funny thing is she went through her "terrible teens" around her 7th month (or what I beleive were), she had a destructive phase but it wasn't as hard as this one, eventually we retrain her and we managed to control her behavior... well, I think is all over again for me!!! That dog is a handful, but you just gotta love her when you find her sitting with her angel face surrounded with tiny bits of shredded newspaper!!!

Hi Andy~
What about the run in with your sister's foster?Did the destructive behavior start before or after that?
Either way I would do the typical-
keep the things she likes to chew out of her reach
make a point to practice obedience with her- get that little doggie mind working :D
& make sure she's getting enough exercise

Hi Melissa, it actually started before the incident with the foster dog, it was around a week ago, last Wednesday I think was the first day she shredded the newspaper... Well, its getting hot and she's getting up before she usually does and I think that gives her a 2 hour gap of nothing to do!!!!
She sleeps in our bedroom but wakes up at 6 a.m., I take her out to the backyard and she plays with husky, goes potty, and at 6:30 a.m. I give her 30 mins of exercises and her breakfast... Now she's starting to wake up around 5:00 a.m., so I take her out at that time, I didn't think about it until now, but I think that might be!!!
We do exercises but I think I'll make the effort and wake up a little earlier to give her an extra half hour... about obedience, I think I'll over too... she will do everything for a treat!!!

I have been told from our trainer that dogs are in their "adolescence" stage until they are 2 years old. She has also told us that the best trained dog is still a dog and could get into stuff that is left within reach.. She has a 11 year old Border Terrier who will still grab her winter hat and shread it if it is left within reach...
