I recently read about making a mix to put in the kong toy. The mix contained plain yogurt, kibble, fruits/veggies and the ends were sealed with cream cheese or peanut butter. You then freeze the mix and give it to the dog. I have used this the past few days for when I need to be gone and my pup needs something to keep her occupied in the crate. I am also using it since she cries in the crate. She loves this mix. I have been freezing them to make them last a long time. My question/concern is how long they can last ? I am worried about her getting it all out before it spoils. She is in the house in her crate, but it takes her a really long time to get everything out of the kong. Is there anything else to mix it with beside all peanut butter that would not spoil? I really do not want the use the premade kong mixes ( they look like cheese whiz).

Thanks,
Ann

I don't know if this will help but the USDA has stated that milk will retain it's quality for twenty four hours without refrigeration. If you are freezing the kong with yogurt it should last at least eight hours.

Maybe instead of using yogurt just use peanut butter. It lasts a lot longer than yogurt. Sometimes if I am going to be gone a really long time I will put ice cubes in the kong along with the other stuff and then freeze it. It might get a little wet where your dog is chewing on it but it keeps the stuff cold, plus no calories. :D Hope this helps.

I haven't tried it but I think beef, chicken or veggie broth would work too.

You could freeze the broth into cubes and use it in the kong too!
