I have been looking all over the internet and looked through a few books but can not find out how often I should be bathing my Beagle and with what. So if anyone could let me know that would be greatly appreciated. He is 12 weeks old and not neutered if this makes any difference.
thanks,
Ursula

I bathe my dogs once a month. If dogs are bathed too often, it irritates their skin. At twelve weeks old, your pup probably shouldn't get a bath unless he's REALLY dirty. (like he just rolled in the mud or something)

Ursula, we were bathing Ace in the winter only when his coat was feeling really oily and he started getting stinky. Now that spring and summer are hear we bathe him about 1x a month and more if he finds some mud, which he loves. Your pup still has the very soft puppy hair and if you think he needs one because he is small go ahead but try and wait till his adult hair starts coming in. My Ace loves bath time! He will get into an empty bathtub and stare at me so sometimes he gets an extra bath in even if he doesn't need it. It doesn't harm him at all.

I have a 14 month old beagle, Nala. She got her first bath at 4 months old and since then I've been bathing her every 4 months. Beagles have a great coat and when she gets all muddy I only wait for it to dry and get it out with a towel or her brush. She nevers get too stinky... and her white hair its always really white. She uses oat shampoo for dark hair because she has a lot of black and brown hair. However, I do brush her hair once a week and more often when she's shedding, I also give her vitamins for her coat and clean her ears at least once a week (this is where all the stink usually comes from). You can bathe your pup as early as now. Beagles have kind of a water resistant coat and dirt just falls from it!!!! This is great news for Nala since she's a real water-hater!!!
Here's a picture of Nala (and please, please post a picture of your baby, I love baby beagles!!!):

(This is her birthday party, she's all muddy after running around in the creek)

Hi,
I don't know if it's a chihuahua thing, but my chi book says once a month or when the dog start to stink. I think it is really best to do it right before the dog starts to stink, lol:)
There are some oatmeal shampoos that may be mild on the skin. If something says tearless, that may be good also. My book said to put cotton balls in her ears to keep water from getting in them, but I avoid her head and wash it with a cloth separately.
I had someone go nuts on me when I said I wash my dog once a month, because she thought it was not enough since she washes her dog once a week or more, but we had different circumstances. Her chihuahua was in the store with her where she worked and was always being pet or picked up and she felt people made her dog dirty. Since she did wash her dog often, she did use some kind of moisturizers that I think was a separate product from the shampoo.
Now that bug season is here and people may be using Advantage and Advantix, it's good to ask the companies if the stuff comes a little each time you bath the dog, so that factor may lead you to only wash the dog once a month, and then put on a new application of bug deterrent. My vet's tech said Advantage stayed on even when the dog was wet better than Advantix, but I really can't take them at their word since I lost trust in them for wanting to put my dog on heartworm med when we don't have heartworm where I live. Every vet will push what product they sell.
Otherwise, the difference between Advantix and Advantage is that Advantix protects against mosquitos too.

well i have two chis and i will bathe them only if they start getting stinky, which is not often, thankfully since they both hate bathes. and when i bathe them i use an oatmeal flea and tick shampoo with moisturizers

My chi does not enjoy the bathing process, but enjoyes having a bath, because afterwards, she runs around the house like a nut and seems to be real happy.

Yes, same thing with Capri! Maybe it's like the dentist; you don't want to go, but later are glad you had your teeth fixed:)
Capri's a riot. I towel her dry and then she zooms around the livingroom at 90 mph.

I have had the pleasure of experincing the same thing with Buster and the other dogs I have owned in the past. WE called it "mad dog syndrome" as they too just went nuts around the house. Andre if I can figure out how to get my picture small enough to post I will definitely post one of Buster.

Hi Ursula, most of all here use photobucket to post pictures, here's what you do:
1. Go to www.photobucket.com and register.
2. Create an album
3. Upload your pictures
4. Select the [IMG] link and copy
5. Paste it to your thread here in doggiedoor
Its helpful to use two separate windows when working with photobucket and doggiedoor. In photobucket you can change the size of your pictures.
Have a great day!!!!

We do cuddle him lots we also notice that he tends to get a heck of a lot cuter after he's done something he shouldn't have :) Just Like my 3 year old. Funny how kids and dogs learn that one very quickly.

lol! Precious hides under the coffee table or in one of the crates (we have 1 for Precious and 1 for Sally) when she has done something wrong, but Sally puts on that cute, "I REALLY didn't do it...it was Precious!" look on her face!

When Nala has done something really bad, like stealing my favorite Snoopy doll, she would go immediately into "down" position, then place her two front paws in the floor and put her face over them, and with a really really cute face looks up at me with her sad eyes, it just makes you wanna hug her, it takes away the angry very quickly... the funny thing is that she still has the doll under one of her paws, but she looks at you with sooooo sad eyes you almost buy the story about how "she didn't do it" and just when you bought it, and turned your sight, she will take the snoopy and start chewing it (with me still standing in front of her), when I look back at her she will do the same thing all over again.... yeah, I think that's the first trick she ever learned!!!! :-P

I just came back from visiting family in NY. I gave Capri a bath and put on Advantix since they have heartworm.
It was so damn hot there!!!! This is a little off topic since it's not bathing, but when I went in the yard to sun myself, I wet her down with cool water, even though she will sit in the shade when she feels hot. I just felt even the temps in the shade were still hot.

The rule I follow is if they stink, bathe them, if they don't stink then don't bathe them. I spray an essential oil combo on my guys for fleas so they tend to get oily very fast, especially my long haired silky. I end up bathing once a week, but I use really good shampoos and they all get some sort of conditioner(whatever is best for their hair) None of my guys have flaky or itchy skin because of how often I bathe them. Just sharing what I do. ~Lauren

Buster is soooo adorable. Maybe we can do a puppy next time (got Kirby at 5 years). How do you leave the house with that face saying "don't go"?
But to the point ... we bathe Kirby (our beagle) when he's dirty or stinky, which in the spring is about every 1-2 months, in fall/winter is probably around 4 months, maybe even more. When he starts scratching in the winter from dry skin we bathe him (moisturizing shampoo, seems to help) but that is around the 4 month mark.

where I walk Leo off lead there is a nice swampy muddy part that attracts his attention without fail. So he gets bathed a lot. You can see why in the picture attached.

Wow--I am impressed by the amount of mud and gook Leo is sporting. I can see why he would get bathed a lot. and what a good Mom you are allowing to have all this fun.
