Hello everyone. I have an 8 month old Keeshond-Sheltie and would like to get a high quality clipper. I have used the guillotine style on my moms dog growing up so I am comfortable with those. Does anyone have a favorite brand or one that works well?
Also, do the ones with safety bars actually work? I guess that would lead me to ask if the quick is always a certain distance from the end of the nail.
Thanks and it sure is great that they opened up a new forum:) since the demise of the old:(

Hi Eric, I just bought a new guillotine style clipper from Wal-mart and it is useless. I had looked at them at Pet-Land and although they were twice as much $$$, they looked exactly the same as the Wal-mart ones.
I am not familiar with the ones with safety bars. Is that something the keeps you from clipping off to much at once? I read recently (probably at DoggieDoor but I'm not sure) that if your dogs nails have gotten long to clip only a little off but do it every week for a while and you won't cut into the quick.

I've got the same style clipper myself, but mine has a nail guard so I don't clip too far in.

Hey Eric,
I suggest taking your pup to Petsmart and have them show you how far to clip. Every dog is different and even professionals can't always see where the quick is. For mine, where the nail starts to split underneath is just before the quick ends, so I clip a little out from there. If you're not sure, take it slow and your pup will let you know if you're about to clip too far.
I use the scissor kind with a guard, although I haven't really used the guard much.

I also use the guillotine style clipper but will probably start taking him to PetSmart. We cut into the quick the very first time and it was A MESS. It was gushing blood and Bailey was running all over the house. We finnally put him into the garage so he would stop gushing on our WHITE carpets. We then used superglue to seal it up. I would suggest having a hardening agent handy to use if this happens. I also bought some Rescue Remedy from a Nature Store to calm him down if something happens again. I know it doesn't hurt them but I would use it calm him down while I fixed it up. Very messy though!
