I decided to try Misty back on Innova. She was originally on Innova Puppy, but had problems with struvite crystals as a young pup. Since the amount of protein could have contributed we switched her to Solid Gold. She absolutely loves the food and her coat is just beautiful. Unfortunately since I switched her (about 2 months ago) she is very itchy. It started about a week after I introduced the Solid Gold and has progressed. She scratches her face and bites her feet. I know it could be environmental allergies, but thought I might try her on Innova again to see if it by chance might help. I had her on Solid Gold Wolf Cub and now I am trying Innova Large Breed Puppy. I eventually would like her on Evo, but I think the protein amount is just too high for her right now.
Any one have any comments on Innova? Solid Gold Wolf Cub is bison and salmon based while the innova is chicken and turkey. Not sure if the bison could have bothered her or was it more likely the grains?

Ann, I got some trial pkgs of Innova kibble for Capri just to have something she can chew on since she does not chew on toys or rawhide, so I give her a few pieces every day since she eats canned food. Then I check out how much it costs. Wow!!!! I don't know how anyone with big dogs can afford these "better" "higher quality" foods!!! One store had the 6.6 bad for $14.99 and another for $13.59. That's no problem since she is so small, but wow anyway!!!
Then I see Newman's Own and I think it was about a 5 pound bag I saw for $19.!!!! Could that be right??? I know they give to charities, but I would rather buy another food and give the saved money to a charity of my own choosing.
I was told the Evo can be too much protein for less active dogs. Solid Gold sure does sound like it may be making your dog itchy. Usually corn is the main culprit, but it can be wheat also. I don't know if the Solid Gold you feed has wheat. It can be an animal protein too which people think of as a last resort and switch to an odd protein. Bison is usually one of the things a person would change their dog to if the dog seemed allergic, but who is to say it doesn't bother your dog. They are individuals. You will soon find out if it was the Bison if you feed Innova and it has some of the same things Solid Gold had in it.

Hi Ann-
Just commenting on dry dog food selections in general. My 6 year old aussie was suffering from repeated UTI infections. I had her on Eagle Pack Duck and Oatmeal, but it's my belief that the protein level was too high, compounding the problem. Now I've switched her to Wellness Senior Mix, and her immune system is in recovery. Wellness has several varieties of dog food designed to reduce allergic reactions. In addition, I'm supplementing her diet with D-Manrose, cranberry capsules, garlic tablets and colostrum powder.
Warm Regards,
Michelle
