Can anyone who's had their puppy neutured give me some ideas on recovery time? Under the spay/neuter thread it seems it's all about little girl puppies!
Sam is due to be neutered soon (he's 5 mos. old now). We are going on vacation the 1st week of July, and he will need to be kenneled at this time. I would prefer that he be nuetered before then, so he can participate in playtime.
thanks for any input!

Boy puppies recover faster than girls... I just had one experience a long time ago but it took my boy around three days to be running around, its not invasive surgery as spay is so they feel better quite quicker than girls. You still have to look after him so he won't jump but I'll say give him a week and he should be fine.
Good luck!!!! :D

Susan, it's best if males are done before one year to cut down on prostate cancer, so you would still have time to go on vacation and come back, but it does sound like a good idea to do it now so that he may be more mellow and easier for him to get along with other dogs at the kennel if he's fixed.

Susan,
My pooch recovered very quickly and he even had to have a little bit of invasive surgery cause one of his testicles had not dropped yet. It only took two days before he wanted to romp and play again, and we had the stitches removed at 7 days. You want to make sure he keeps that area clean, but he'll probably do that himself. If the surgery is done now, he will definitely be good to go by July 1st!

Hi Susan,
You may also want to find out if your vet is equipped for laser surgery. We opted for that with both our boys: smaller incision, less bleeding, less invasive, fewer stitches that were self-dissolving.
We also did early neutering at 14 weeks, and they both bounced back as soon as the anesthesia wore off. Have a great vacation!

Rudy was neutered at 6 1/2 months. We also opted for laser surgery. He was back to his normal self two days later but stitches weren't removed for 14 days. Call your vet and see how long they leave the stitches in. I wouldn't kennel him until they were removed.

Hi,
Laser surgery is more money, but as was stated, it's supposed to be better. I didn't use laser sugery with Capri, because my vet seemed a little too new to using it, so it concerned me.

Thanks everyone!
I'll check into the laser surgery. I definitely want to have the procedure done before we leave, because if not, his playtime will be with other non-neutered males. That worries me, since he's not full grown yet, and Scotties are a bit scrappy! He loves other dogs right now, and I don't want that to change!
